US National Red & White Convention 2015

The US National Red & White Convention is in full swing  “Seeing Red in the Scenic Hills of Iowa” this week in Decorah, IA, and Cowsmo is there providing convention coverage thanks to our generous sponsors from International Protein Sires & Merial!

Wednesday July 15th
The second day of the US National Red & White convention featured the convention show, judged by Hank Van Exel, CA. While small on numbers, the show was great on quality. At the end of the day, Willow-Marsh Sundance-Red was named Intermediate & Grand Champion for Norman Nabholz, IA. Click HERE to see results and photos from the show!

The evening featured the membership meeting and banquet. Retiring board directors Yvonne Preder, WI and Sam Appleby, MB were thanked for their years of service. Gary Janssen, IL was re-relected to continue on the board, and Sarah Wendorf, WI and Bonnie VanDyk, WI were elected as new board members.

After the meal, attendees listened to several guest speakers, including Christina Johanna Paulsen Schluter, the President of the European Red Dairy Breed Association. Christina gave a presentation on the German Red Angler breed that she works with. Graeme Hamilton, President of the Australian Red Dairy Breed Association, issued an invitation for all to make plans to attend the 2019 International Red  Dairy Breeds Federation Conference in Australia in March 2019. This conference will feature an eight day tour along with two days of meetings and conferences. Dave Pierson, President of the National Dairy Shrine, updated members on all the activities, scholarships and other important things that the Dairy Shrine is doing, and encouraged all to become members.

Following the guest speakers, production awards, All-American Awards and Junior All-American awards were distributed. Three, $1,000 junior scholarships were announced, to Mikayla Bailey, VA; Ashley Mohn, PA; and Hannah VanDyk, CA. Hannah Hensel, WI was presented with her award for winning the Junior Division of the essay contest, and Sarah Thomas, NC won the Intermediate Division.

2014 National Red & White Queen Katrina Nunes gave her retiring address, and thanked the membership for all the memories, and her parents for all their support. Anna Troester announced that Carley Krull, WI would serve as the 2015 National Red & White Queen, and Taylor Jirousek, MN would be the alternate.

Award recognition continued with Gary Janssen, IL being honored with the Don Albrecht Distinguished Service Award, presented by Jake Skinner. Jim and Vicky Cleland, WI were named the Larry Moore Master Breeder Award by Stephanie Aves. Katrina Nunes gave a touching presentation, announcing her parents, Matt and Mandy Nunes, WI as the J.P. “Doc” Ostrander Young Breeder award winners. Anna Troester presented Michael Lyons, IA with the Junior Breeder Award, and to cap off the evening, Mike Brown presented Jerry Good with the Gary Mayhew Keystone Award.

To close out the evening, Jake Skinner invited everyone to plan to attend the 2016 National Convention in Westminster, MD July 7-9, 2016.

After returning to Decorah, a meal was hosted at the fairgrounds by the Doug & Lynnette Lyons family. Katrina Nunes, the 2014 National Red & White Queen, introduced Taylor Jirousek and Carley Krull as the candidates for 2015 Queen. Each young woman then gave a presentation on how to best promote the Red & White breed and association.

MADISON, WI- The Red & White Dairy Cattle Association extends an invitation to all Red & White enthusiasts to attend the 2015 National Red & White Convention, “Seeing Red in the Scenic Hills of Iowa.” Festivities are scheduled for July 14-16 in Decorah, Iowa. Mark your calendars to attend this year’s convention! Deadline to register is June 23, 2015.

Tuesday, July 14th: The 2015 National Convention kicks off with four farm tours to area Red and White breeders. The day will begin at Lyons Holsteins (Doug & Lynnette Lyons & Family) of Castalia. Following this, we will head to Henkeseen Holsteins (Trent & Leslie Henkes & Family) of Luana. Our next stop will be to Rolling Prairie Guernseys (Dan & Ann Walther & Family) of Garnavillo. The final stop of the day will be to Regancrest Farm of Waukon.

After a busy day of tours, a complimentary dinner will be served at the Winneshiek County Fairgrounds in the Danan Lansing Building. This dinner is hosted by the Doug and Lynnette Lyons Family. At the end of the day, the National Red and White Queen Contest will be held followed by the Annual RWDCA Board Meeting. Cost to attend Farm Tour Day is $15/person which includes transportation and meals for the day.

Wednesday, July 15th: The Convention continues with the National Red and White Convention Show at 10:00a.m. with showmanship beginning at 9:00a.m. Following the show, the Official RWDCA Annual Banquet will be held in the upper level of T-Bocks in Decorah. Social hour begins at 6:30p.m. with the Banquet and Annual RWDCA Membership Meeting to follow at 7:00p.m. The cost for the meeting and banquet is $25/person.

Thursday, July 16th: The National Red & White Convention concludes with the 46th National Red & White Convention Sale at 10:00a.m. There will be complimentary rolls and drinks provided prior to the sale at the Winneshiek County Fairgrounds. The sale is managed by Courtney Sales, LLC, Scott and Amy Courtney. An online catalog will be available for your viewing at www.redandwhitecattle.com. Be sure to purchase your raffle ticket for the amazing opportunity to be the winner of a choice of TWO Red and White heifers. Proceeds go towards the Red & White Albrecht Memorial Scholarship. These are heifers that anyone would be happy to have bred or potentially own. Be sure to have the winning ticket to add one of these heifers to your herd!

Optional Event:
Friday, July 17th: There will be an additional event on this day that is optional for all Red and White Enthusiasts. We are taking a trip to Cedar Rapids for a Cedar Rapids Kernels baseball game. This night is Agriculture night for the Kernels. We will be in box seating so all drinks and food are included. Cost is $27/person. Please contact the RWDCA office for more information.
