In our Dairy Report, the latest Drought Monitor shows 65% of the Northeast experiencing some sort of drought or dryness.
That’s actually a 13% improvement over the previous week.
But for dairies in the region it comes too late to save crops and forage.
“Central New York has had a tough time, and I’ve heard silage yields being down 40 or 5%. The grain yields on a lot of that corn was good, but they just won’t have the tonnage. Alfalfa and hay prices have just gone through the roof, so their margins are going to be squeezed where they’re really feeling that drought,” says Dairy Herd Management editor Jim Dickrell.
