All great things begin with a strong foundation and this could not be more true for Val and Shayne Jones of Joren Holsteins who have just recently became one of Holstein Canada’s newest Master Breeders!
With a strong background founded by Val’s parents, she and her husband Shayne and their three boys have learned the value of loving good cows and hard work. If you look after good cows they will certainly do the rest!

We grow corn silage and hay and hayledge and all field work is custom done.
We feed a TMR with Haylage, Corn silage and a bought pellet
Nous cultivons du maïs d’ensilage, du foin et de l’ensilage de foin, tout le travail aux champs se fait à forfait. Nous soignons à l’aide d’une RTM avec de l’ensilage de foin, d’ensilage de maïs et nous achetons des suppléments alimentaires
We have a tie stall facility in an old bank barn ,last year we put in a high head rail to help improve our cow comfort and we also have pasture mats.
Nous avons une étable attachée dans une vielle ferme et nous avons mis des rails au plafond l’an passé. Pour le confort des vaches, nous avons aussi des matelas.
The farm is run by Val and Shayne and their 3 boys.
Tanner is in his first year at Ridgetown college, Trent is 15 and going to high school he enjoys helping to mate cows and develop the show calves. Keeton is 11 and helps wth calves and is in 4-H.
La ferme est exploitée par Val et Shayne, et leurs trois fils. Tanner en est à sa première année au collège Ridgetown, Trent a 15 ans est va à l’école secondaire, il adore nous aider et développer les taures d’expositions. Keeton à 11 ans et aide avec les veaux et il est impliquer dans les 4H

Val’s dad Frank Meisner is a huge part of the operation and still comes to the the barn twice a day and helps with chores. In the busy season he helps out were ever needed as both Shayne and Val work at off farm jobs. Val’s mom Barb has always been a great help when the kids were younger as she was always available to look after the kids when needed and is the best at getting stains out of white show pants.
Le père de Val Frank Meisner est un gros morceau des opérations de la ferme, vient encore deux fois par jour à la l’étable et aide avec les trains et dans les saisons plus occupées, il aide dehors pour n’importe quoi que ce soit quand Shayne et Val ont terminé dans l’étable. La mère de Val Barb a toujours été d’une précieuse aide quand les enfants étaient jeunes, car elle était toujours disponible pour jeter un œil sur eux et elle est la meilleure pour enlever les tâches sur des pantalons blancs!
Was achieving your Master Breeder shield a goal you set when you 1st started breeding cattle?
By all means a Master Breeder Shield was a huge goal for us when we took over the farm. We started our prefix in 1993 when we got married and we started with a heifer Val bought from Jim Walker for a 4-H calf and she is in the pedigree of most of the cows that gave us points for this Shield.
Par tout ce que veut dire un titre de Maître Éleveur, il s’agissait un très grand but que nous avions quand nous avons pris la ferme. Nous avons débuté notre préfixe en 1993 quand nous nous sommes mariés et nous avons commencé nos bases avec une génisse que Val avait acheté de Jim Walker pour un projet 4H et elle est aujourd’hui dans la généalogie de plusieurs vaches qui nous on donné des points pour ce mérite.
Most influential cow family(s) that helped earn the Master Breeder Shield? Was she or they purchased or bred?
Madawaska Sultan Mist purchased as a heifer from Jim Walker she was a great brood cow
Joren Lindy Missy (daughter of Mist)we bred and she has transmitted great dairy strong cattle.
Joren Gibson Havanna, she was sold as a calf through the Sale of Stars and bought by Dr George Woods, then George asked us if we would milk her for him after she calved. George flushed her and we bought her back as an aged cow.
Sire that worked well and you feel had the most impact on your herd? Sires that influenced our herd were Gibson and Lindy

What bulls are you using now? What do you look for in a sire? Would you say you are type, genomic, production focused or a combination of these?
Sires used right now are genomic sires out of strong cow families. We like our Windhammer calves and have just calved out our first one and she looks really promising!
We are also trying to develop a young Bolton we bought with Geoff Innes at the Intrigue sale. We have flushed her this year and have just put her back in calf to Anton.
Les taureaux utilisés présentement sont des génomiques qui proviennent de fortes familles de vaches. Nous aimons nos veaux de Windhammers et nous venons tout juste de vêler notre première et elle a un avenir très prometteur. Nous essayons également de développer une jeune Bolton que nous avons achetée à Geoff Innes à la Vente Intrigue. Nous l’avons récoltée cette année et nous venons de la remettre en veau par Anton.
Future Goals?
Now that we have achieved our Master Breeder Shield, we would like to try and expand that if our children would like to milk cows maybe the next Shield will be the boys doing it.
Maintenant que nous avons reçu le titre de Maîre Éleveur, nous voudrions essayer d’agrandir l’entreprise, si bien sûr les enfants veulent traire des vaches et peut-être qu’ils seront récipiendaire la prochaine plaque.
Name an animal (cow or bull) in the breed you admire the most and give reason why?
As for a cow we admire in the breed I think we all have our favourit but they all would be big frame cows that transmit strength and good production. The dream cow of any dairy farmer.
Pour ce qui est de la vache que nous admirons dans la race, je crois que nous avons tous notre favorite, mais elles devraient être une grosse vache puissante qui transmet sa force et sa production. La vache de rêve de tout éleveur laitier.
Before achieving your Master Breeder Shield what would you consider your greatest accomplishment as a Dairy Farmer and Holstein Breeder.
Our biggest achievement before our Shield would be Joren Allen Mystery (now owned by Breezehill) nominated All Canadian in 2007
