Brantford, Ont. – Holstein Canada is pleased to announce that both a Certificate of Superior Accomplishment and a Certificate of Recognition will be presented at the Annual General Meeting in Banff, Alta. on April 23, 2016. Norm and Marj Atkins of Continental Holsteins in Leduc, Alta. will receive the Certificate of Superior Accomplishment, while Bruce Witmer of Speedside Holsteins in Cambridge, Ont. will receive the Certificate of Recognition.
The Atkins’ and their Continental Holsteins have a long, successful history in the show ring locally, nationally and internationally. In addition to their many show champions over the years, the Atkins’ have bred countless great cows earning them a Master Breeder Shield in 1988. Both Norm and Marj were Official Judges with Holstein Canada and have judged many shows across Canada and internationally. For many years, Norm was an integral member of the team in charge of transporting, caring for, preparing and showing the animals from the west going to both World Dairy Expo and the Royal Winter Fair. Both Norm and Marj have served as Alberta Holstein Branch Directors, each also serving their term as President during their 10-year tenures. Norm also served as a Director of ADHIS (Alberta DHI). During the show years of Acme Star Lily and Rainyridge Tony Beauty, Continental Holsteins always promoted Alberta Holsteins, and also promoted that good Holsteins can be found in Western Canada. Beyond their success with their herd, the Atkins’ are first and foremost mentors to many. They are always quick to help out local 4-H clubs and Western Canadian Classic participants, and are keen to share their judging/reasons skills with these enthusiastic young dairy people. Norm was awarded the Curtis Clark Achievement Award in 1995. Marj served as Chair of the Curtis Clark Achievement Award committee for many years, doing numerous award presentations over the years, and was presented with an award named in her honour, the Marj Atkins Achievement Award, in 2014.
“The Continental team of Norm and Marj put their heart and soul into the Holstein business and prefer working in the barns, being at the shows or talking Holsteins,” writes nominator Doug Peart, on behalf of an extended group of Holstein enthusiasts from across a few provinces involved in putting this nomination together. “This passionate couple has promoted Canadian Holsteins throughout their entire farming career and they are very deserving of this award as their accomplishments truly are superior.”
Bruce Witmer of Speedside Holsteins is a passionate cow man with a true love for great cows with superior cow families. He was raised on his family’s purebred Holstein farm; took over the milking herd with his wife Joyce in 1960; and continued to milk cows every day until 2005. His animals have since been moved to his son’s herd in Oxford County where Bruce remains an active part of the breeding decisions and still registers approximately 20 animals per year under his Speedside prefix. He has always been a strong advocate of the Canadian Holstein, a great supporter of Holstein Canada programs and true believer in the value of advertising. Bruce has given back to industry by serving as a Director and President of the Waterloo Holstein Club; Councillor with the Ontario Holstein Branch; host to many domestic and international tour groups; and involvement with the Soil & Crop, Waterloo Federation of Agriculture, Advance Registry Yorkshire Club and Galt/Cambridge
Fall Fair. Most impressive is Bruce’s commitment to enhancing our youth. Serving as a 4-H leader for over 56 years, Bruce has been a true mentor to hundreds of young people who have gone on to build their own successful dairy farms, including former hired man Mike Bechtel who got his start with the support of Bruce and continues to milk his herd at the Speedside farm. A founding financial supporter of the Ontario Holstein Jr. Shows, Bruce has made significant financial contributions and has seen more than 3,500 young people start their show careers at the two-day educational events. Bruce was a 4-H Arbor Award Winner, Citizen of the Year for Waterloo Region, University of Guelph Award winner for his numerous contributions to Agriculture and has received many conservation accolades.
“Bruce has been instrumental in not only promoting the programs of our Holstein breed, but initiating the lifelong interest in the dairy industry for so many of our young people,” writes Angela Howard on behalf of the nominator the Ontario Holstein Branch. “His mentorship and incredibly generous support make possible the opportunity to educate and promote the importance of utilizing all of the programs and services that our industry offers.”
Both incredibly prestigious and distinguished awards, the Certificate of Superior Accomplishment and the Certificate of Recognition have only been awarded a combined total of 21 times since 1954. The Certificate of Superior Accomplishment was last awarded in 2013, while the last Certificate of Recognition was honoured in 2008. Both awards recognize qualities and activities such as: enhancing working relationships; promoting the breed, the Association, and/or Association programs; mentorship and leadership; education; and time and contribution significantly over and above what is considered “part of the job”. The Certificate of Superior Accomplishment recognizes these qualities and activities with a national/international impact, while the Certificate of Recognition recognizes these same qualities and activities with more of a provincial or regional impact.
Des prix de distinction seront décernés à l’AGA

Brantford (Ont.) – Holstein Canada a le plaisir d’annoncer que deux prix de distinction seront décernés le 23 avril 2016 à l’Assemblée générale annuelle à Banff (Alb.) : un Certificat de mérite supérieur sera remis à Norm et Marj Atkins de Continental Holsteins, Leduc (Alb.), et un Certificat de reconnaissance sera remis à Bruce Witmer de Speedside Holsteins, Cambridge (Ont.).
Les Atkins et leur troupeau Holsteins Continental ont une longue histoire jalonnée de réussites dans l’arène au niveau local, national et international. Au fil des ans, les Atkins ont compté de nombreuses championnes d’exposition et ont élevé d’innombrables vaches de grande qualité qui leur ont permis de devenir Maîtres-Éleveurs en 1988. Norm et Marj étaient juges officiels de Holstein Canada et ont officié dans beaucoup de jugements partout au pays et à l’international. Pendant de nombreuses années, Norm était membre à part entière de l’équipe chargée du transport, des soins, de la préparation et de la présentation des animaux de l’Ouest à la World Dairy Expo et à la Foire royale d’hiver de l’agriculture de Toronto. Norm et Marj ont siégé en tant qu’administrateurs de la branche Holstein de l’Alberta, et ont tous deux occupé le poste de président pendant leurs 10 ans passés au conseil d’administration de la branche. Norm fut également administrateur de l’ADHIS (le contrôle laitier albertain). Pendant les années dans l’arène d’Acme Star Lily et Rainyridge Tony Beauty, Continental Holsteins a toujours fait la promotion des Holstein de l’Alberta et des belles vaches qui se trouvent dans l’ouest du Canada. Au-delà de leur succès avec leur troupeau, les Atkins sont avant tout des mentors pour beaucoup de personnes. Ils sont toujours prêts à aider les clubs 4-H locaux et les participants à la Classique Western Canadian et sont désireux de partager leurs connaissances sur le jugement et les raisons avec ces jeunes enthousiastes de l’industrie laitière. Norm a reçu le Prix de réalisation Curtis Clark en 1995. Pendant des années, Marj a occupé le poste de présidente du Comité du Prix de réalisation Curtis Clark, remettant de nombreux prix au fil des ans. Une reconnaissance a d’ailleurs été nommée en son honneur en 2014 : le Prix de réalisation Marj Atkins.
Au nom d’un grand nombre de passionnés Holstein de plusieurs provinces, Doug Peart a soumis la candidature des Atkins en indiquant que « l’équipe de Continental ainsi que Norm et Marj se sont consacrés corps et âme aux affaires Holstein et préfèrent travailler à l’étable, participer à des expositions ou parler des Holstein. Ce couple passionné a fait la promotion de la Holstein canadienne tout au long de sa carrière en tant qu’exploitants agricoles et ils sont très méritants de ce prix, car leurs réalisations sont véritablement exceptionnelles »
Bruce Witmer de Speedside Holsteins est un passionné de vaches avec un véritable amour pour les grandes vaches issues de lignées de qualité supérieure. Il a grandi sur la ferme familiale Holstein de race pure et a repris le troupeau laitier avec son épouse Joyce en 1960. Il a continué à traire les vaches tous les jours jusqu’en 2005. Ses animaux ont depuis été déplacés dans le troupeau de son fils dans le comté d’Oxford où Bruce continue de participer aux décisions d’accouplement et continue d’enregistrer environ 20 animaux par an sous son préfixe Speedside. Il a toujours été un fervent défenseur des Holstein canadiennes, un grand partisan des programmes de Holstein Canada et est totalement acquis aux avantages de la publicité. Bruce a redonné à l’industrie en siégeant en tant
qu’administrateur et président du Club Holstein de Waterloo, il a également été conseiller auprès de la branche Ontario Holstein, il a accueilli de nombreux groupes de visiteurs nationaux et internationaux et s’est impliqué avec Soil & Crop, Waterloo Federation of Agriculture, Advance Registry Yorkshire Club et la foire d’automne de Galt/Cambridge. Plus impressionnant encore est l’engagement de Bruce envers l’amélioration de notre jeunesse. Officiant comme animateur 4-H depuis plus de 56 ans, il a été un véritable mentor pour des centaines de jeunes qui ont depuis bâti leurs propres fermes laitières avec succès, y compris son ancien homme de main Mike Bechtel que Bruce a soutenu à ses débuts et qui continue de traire son troupeau à la ferme Speedside. Bruce fait partie des tout premiers commanditaires des expositions junior Holstein de l’Ontario, il a très souvent apporté sa contribution financière et a pu voir plus de 3500 jeunes commencer leur carrière dans l’arène grâce aux activités éducatives sur deux jours. Bruce a remporté le prix 4-H Arbor, celui de citoyen de l’année pour la région de Waterloo, lauréat de l’Université de Guelph pour ses nombreuses contributions envers l’agriculture et a reçu de nombreuses distinctions pour la conservation.
Au nom de la branche Ontario Holstein qui a soumis la candidature de Bruce Witmer, Angela Howard indique que « Bruce a joué un rôle clé non seulement dans la promotion des programmes de notre race Holstein, mais aussi pour susciter l’intérêt permanent de tant de jeunes pour notre industrie laitière. Son mentorat et son soutien incroyablement généreux ont permis de créer des opportunités d’apprentissage et de promouvoir l’importance d’utiliser tous les programmes et services offerts par notre industrie. »
Ces deux prix sont incroyablement prestigieux : le Certificat de mérite supérieur et le Certificat de reconnaissance ont seulement été décernés 21 fois depuis 1954. La dernière fois qu’un Certificat de mérite supérieur a été décerné fut en 2013, et en 2008 pour le Certificat de reconnaissance. Ces deux prix récompensent des qualités et activités comme : l’amélioration des relations de travail, la promotion de la race, de l’Association et des programmes de l’Association, le mentorat et le leadership, l’éducation, un temps et une contribution nettement supérieurs à ce qui est considéré comme « faisant partie du cadre du travail ». Le Certificat de mérite supérieur récompense ces qualités et activités avec un impact national et international, tandis que le Certificat de reconnaissance récompense ces mêmes qualités et activités avec un impact plus provincial ou régional.
