Dairy Calf and Heifer Association webinar focuses on electrolyte therapy

Dairy Calf and Heifer Association’s (DCHA) April 16 webinar features “Electrolyte Therapy in Calves.” This one-hour educational offering starts at 1 p.m. Central time.

Geof Smith, a professor of ruminant nutrition in the department of population health and pathobiology at North Carolina State University, will address calf diarrhea treatment, neonatal calf dehydration, metabolic acidosis, depression scores, electrolyte abnormalities and negative energy balance during this webinar.

Smith will explain calf diarrhea goals – rehydration, replenish electrolytes, correct acid-base abnormalities and provide nutritional support. “If diarrhea is recognized early, oral electrolyte solution (OES) can successfully address these goals,” said Smith. He will provide insights regarding OES product selection and feeding protocols to achieve optimal success.

Furthermore, Smith will address myths related to calf diarrhea treatments. For example, dating back to the 1940s, it’s been recommended to withhold milk from calves with diarrhea. “No research has demonstrated that this speeds intestinal healing or resolution,” said Smith. “Calves need energy to live; continued milk feeding is important for successful treatment.”

Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in animal and dairy science from Clemson University and master’s degree in toxicology and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Illinois. Following graduation, Smith completed an internship and residency in ruminant internal medicine, and doctorate degree in physiology. Smith is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and his primary clinical and research interests revolve around clinical medicine of ruminants, with a specific focus on calf health and pharmacology.
