California Dairies Inc., rejoins the National Milk Producers Federation

The National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) announced June 4 that California Dairies Inc, a dairy cooperative based in Visalia, will be rejoining the Federation.

California Dairies is the largest milk cooperative in California and the second largest in the United States by volume, supplying 40 percent of California’s dairy products and 9 percent of the U.S.’s milk supply.

California Dairies was a member of NMPF until 2007, when the cooperative left after unknown conflicts with the Federation, according to an Agri-Pulse story.

“We are very pleased to have [California Dairies]’s voice among our already strong and active membership,” said Jim Mulhern, president and CEO of NMPF, in a press release.

California Dairies is co-owned by nearly 400 California dairy producers who ship 16 billion pounds of milk annually. NMPF is the largest U.S. dairy-farmer organization.

“California Dairies, Inc. is excited to begin our membership with the National Milk Producers Federation as we work toward a stronger U.S. dairy industry,” said Simon Vander Woude, Chairman of the California Dairies Board of Directors.

NMPF voted unanimously to admit California Dairies into the Federation at a board meeting in June. The cooperative will have five seats on a board of 53 members.
