Ferme Kamouraska is one of four recipients of the 2014 Ayrshire Master Breeder Shield. We’ve got the details on what’s inspired them, what their operation is like and how they’ve achieved this elite status for their herd!
Was achieving your Master Breeder shield a goal you set when you 1st started breeding cattle?
Our first goal was to breed an Ayrshire bull to improve the milk side within the Ayrshire breed.

They are all from the Kamouraska breed Kamouraska Virvana, Kamouraska Jupi Uby and Kamouraska Lolita
If you purchase cattle, what do you look for? If you haven’t purchase cattle in a while, when was the last animal bought?
Genomics, pedigree and production in the family are all considered.
Do you flush? When did you start? How often do you flush? Export/sell or implant? Embryo Transfer work is an important aspect for this herd and our awards. We started 15 years ago, flushing heifers with young sires. In every flush, Pascal tried to sell 1 or 2 embryos for export to pay for the flush.
Future Goals?
Keep going in the improvement of the genetics in the herd and in the production, and improve the conformation.

Bulls used, what do you look for in a sire?
Pascal is a breeder who fixes his choice on the genomic and the production. He looks for a sire with high production and component index. For the conformation, the important point is to not have any negative points.
Have you changed your breeding philosophy over the years at all?
No, our ultimate challenge is to have young cows producing 10,000kg with 5% of fat and 4% of protein, and he is close to achieving that.
Before achieving your Master Breeder Shield what would you consider your greatest accomplishment as a Dairy Farmer and Holstein Breeder?
Well, everything happened at the same time! We bred the 2 best proven sires for LPI and sold the highest genomic one!

Non, mon but était d’élever un taureau vedette qui augmenterait la production de la race Ayrshire.

Les vaches vedettes de mon titre proviennent de mon élevage, soit Kamouraska Virvana, Kamouraska Jupi Uby, Kamouraska Lolita
Faites-vous des récoltes embryonnaires ? Quand avez-vous commencé ? À quelle fréquence faites-vous des récoltes ? Les vendez-vous ou implantez la majeure partie ?
La récolte d’embryons est importante dans la réussite de notre élevage. J’ai commencé il y a 15 ans, en récoltant des génisses avec des jeunes taureaux. À chaque récolte, j’essayais de vendre 1 ou 2 embryons à l’export, questions de rentabiliser la récolte.

Quels sont le ou les taureaux qui ont eu un gros impact dans votre troupeau
Les jeunes taureaux et les taureaux Européens. Orraryd et Peterslund principalement.
Quels taureaux utilisés vous présentèrent? Que recherchez-vous d’un taureau? Diriez-vous que vous êtes plus un troupeau axé de conformation, génomique, production ou une combinaison de tout.
Je suis un éleveur axé sur la génomique et la production. Je recherche un taureau avec des indices de production et composantes les plus élevés. Pour la conformation, l’important est qu’il n’ait pas de point négatif.
Avez-vous changé votre philosophie d’élevage à travers les années? Pourquoi?
Non. Mon objectif ultime est d’avoir de jeunes vaches produisant 10 000 kg à 5% gras et 4% protéine et je suis très proche du but.
Avant d’être récompensé de votre titre de Maître Éleveur, quel serait pour vous le plus grand accomplissement en tant que producteur laitier et éleveur ?
Bien, je pense que tout arrive en même temps, d’avoir élevé les 2 meilleurs taureaux en IPV éprouvé et d’avoir soumis le meilleur taureau génomique.
