West Virginia Raw Milk Vetoed

West Virginia Governor Earl Ray Tomblin has vetoed a bill which would have allowed raw milk sales to consumers in the state through herd-sharing agreements.  Under such agreements, consumers in effect buy a cow or a share of a cow from a farmer but leave them on the farm.  They then can get unpasteurized milk from the farm.

Tomblin said he couldn’t sign the bill because consumption of raw milk “would pose a serious threat to public health.”

The state’s House of Delegates passed the bill 81-to-19 while the Senate approved it by an 18-to-16 margin.
