A southeastern Vermont yogurt manufacturer has been chosen as one of three suppliers of Greek yogurt for a federally-assisted meal program.
The Brattleboro Reformer reports the Department of Agriculture this year moved to include Greek yogurt as one of the foods schools can choose to use federal funding on. Commonwealth Yogurt, which opened in Brattleboro in 2011, will now supply about 7,000 pounds of yogurt every year to schools in Vermont and Connecticut. The new rule takes effect in September.
In 2013, the USDA included Greek yogurt in a three-month pilot program in four states. Eight more states, including Vermont, were added to the program in 2014.
Two New York companies — Chobani and Upstate Niagara Cooperative — were also chosen to supply yogurt for the program.
