New York Hosts 2016 National Holstein Convention in Saratoga Springs (2/4/2016)

NY Charm: City to Farm
Saratoga Springs, N.Y., is Health, History, and Horses. We’ll be adding Holsteins as well as enticing Polo, Revolutionary War and Baseball Hall of Fame experiences to the National Holstein Convention schedule for June 27 – July 1, 2016.
Holstein USA is the world’s largest dairy breed organization, composed of members who have an interest in breeding, raising and milking Holstein cattle. Headquartered in Brattleboro, Vermont, the Association is a nonprofit membership organization that offers programs and services to the dairy industry and holds its Annual Meeting each June.
Last year’s national convention was held in St. Charles, IL and New York previously hosted the 1993 National Convention in Rochester. Known as the “Cradle of the Holstein Breed,” New York was home to the first registered Holstein herd established by Gerrit S. Miller in Peterboro, NY (Madison County). Miller also began the practice of weighing and recording daily production in 1869 supervised by Dr. Stephen M. Babcock while he was employed at the NY Agriculture Experiment Station in Geneva, NY before going to the University of Wisconsin where he invented the butterfat test.
In fact, the National Holstein Association was created in Buffalo, NY in 1885 with a vote of 96 breeders merging the NY and Massachusetts Holstein Associations. Today, Holstein Association USA maintains the records for all ancestry, identity, ownership and performance information on more than 22 million Registered Holstein cattle that is contained in Association files. You can gather more than 10 generations of lineage, dating back to before 1900.
The Saratoga Hilton, our headquarters, is adjoined to the City Center where our contests, meetings and sale will be held. While Saratoga Springs may not share New York City’s size and scale, it has been named among “America’s Top 10 Main Streets” by Travel and Leisure. As hosts of the National Holstein Convention in 2016, we began our addition of Holsteins to Saratoga Springs’ main street, which is Broadway,
Youth are a portion of the 1200 person contingency (youth and adults) coming to Saratoga Springs and represent nearly all of the states.
The Junior Holstein members are under the age of 21 and have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities, all aimed at helping youth increase their knowledge of the dairy industry, strengthen self-confidence, and build leadership skills, preparing them for the future. In NY, there are over 1,000 members: youthful Holstein cow enthusiasts.
Junior contests include Dairy Bowl, Dairy Jeopardy and Public Speaking.
Hotel and schedule information can be found at and like us on for convention for NY Charm and convention teasers.
