US Milk production numbers released

Dairy herds in Michigan produced 941 million pounds of milk during April, up 4.2 percent from a year ago, according to Marlo Johnson, Regional Director of USDA, NASS, Great Lakes Regional Office.

The daily rate per cow was 73.8 pounds, up 1.6 pounds from April 2016. The dairy herd was estimated at 425,000 head for April, up 8,000 head from a year earlier. Dairy herds in Indiana produced 364 million pounds of milk during April, up 3.1 percent from a year ago, according to Greg Matli, State Statistician of the USDA, NASS, Indiana Field Office. The daily rate per cow was 65.2 pounds, up 1.2 pounds from April 2016. The dairy herd was estimated at 186,000 head for April, up 2,000 head from a year earlier.

Dairy herds in Ohio produced 474 million pounds of milk during April, up 0.6 percent from a year ago, according to Cheryl Turner, State Statistician of the USDA, NASS, Ohio Field Office. The daily rate per cow was 60.3 pounds, up 1.3 pounds from April 2016. The dairy herd was estimated at 262,000 head for April, down 4,000 head from a year earlier.

Milk production in the 23 major States during April totaled 17.2 billion pounds, up 2.0 percent from April 2016. The daily production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 65.6 pounds for April, 0.7 pounds above April 2016. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.72 million head, 81,000 head more than April 2016, and 8,000 head more than March 2017.
