Type of feed fed?
Haylage, corn silage, high moisture corn, supplement, free choice hay, and the high producing group also gets some roasted soybeans. Name people involved in the farm?
My wife Marlise (bookkeeping, gardening, lawn maintenance, and she helps as needed in the barn), my son Marco (full-time – responsible for the cows and heifers), Marco’s girlfriend, Ashley Hall (she looks after the calves in the mornings and helps on weekends). I am also full-time – I am responsible for the land and cash crop side. Marco and I work together as a team. My daughters Sandra and Martina still help out occasionally as well.

Was achieving your Master Breeder shield a goal you set when you 1st started breeding cattle?
No, because we immigrated from Switzerland in 1991 and we had no idea then that the Master Breeder shield existed. We had to buy all of our cows, and almost half of them had no pedigree. Our main objective was to breed high producing type cows with good longevity.

Nous devions acheter toutes nos vaches, et la moitié de celles-ci étaient sans papier. Notre objectif principal était d’élever des vaches hautes en production avec de la conformation et une bonne longévité.
Most influential cow family(s) that helped earn the Master Breeder Shield? Was she or they purchased or bred?
They were all home-bred.
1. Ulmar Rudolph Daisy VG-88 – she had superior type and solid production
2. Ulmar Skychief Jewel VG-88 – she had high type, high production and had 3 Superior Lactations
3. Ulmar Outside Maya GP-83 – high type, high production and longevity
Note: Ulmar Skychief Jewel had two daughters with high lifetime production: Ulmar Carlton Cinderella VG-85 – 130,041 kg milk (1 Super 3, 3 Superior Lactations) & Ulmar Outside Jackie GP 83 – 107,254 kg milk (2 Super 3’s, 4 Superior Lactations). Ulmar Outside Jackie also had a daughter – Ulmar Morty Janice VG-88 that has produced 88,177 kg to-date.
Sire that worked well and you feel had the most impact on your herd?
We liked using Allen, Spirte, and Outside. They produced great brood cows with good longevity.

What bulls are you using now? What do you look for in a sire? Would you say you are type, genomic, production focused or a combination of these?
We use Chelios, Jett Air, Shottle, Lauthority, Aftershock, and between 20-30% genomic sires. We focus on a combination of type and production, and look for these in a sire proof.

Before achieving your Master Breeder Shield what would you consider your greatest accomplishment as a Dairy Farmer and Holstein Breeder.
Our greatest achievement as a dairy farmer was moving to Canada and purchasing our own farm, after I spent 19 years working for other people. We are happy to have built it into something that the next generation can take over. Our greatest accomplishment as a Holstein breeder is to have bred an EX-94-3E cow – Ulmar Spirte Lima and to have bred & owned the 2013 All-Ontario 4-H Jr. Yearling & Reserve All-Canadian 4-H Jr. Yearling – Ulmar Windbrook Elmo.
Notre plus grand accomplissement en tant que producteur laitier fut de déménager au Canada et d’acheter notre propre ferme, après avoir travailler 19 ans pour d’autres personnes. Nous sommes heureux d’avoir construit cela avec quelque chose que la prochaine génération pourra exploiter également. Notre plus belle réalisation en tant qu’éleveur Holstein fut d’avoir élevé et d’être propriétaire d’une vache EX-93 3E – Ulmar Spirte Lima, et d’avoir élevé et d’être propriétaire de la Toute Ontario 4H 1 an Junior et Réserve Toute Canadienne 4H 1 un Junior – Ulmar Windbrook Elmo.
Future Goals?
We want to keep improving our herd, and one day we want to build a new barn that houses all the cows and heifers (over 7 months old).
Nous voulons continuer d’exploiter au mieux notre troupeau et un jour, nous aimerions construire une nouvelle étable pour y loger toutes les vaches et les taures de plus de 7 mois.
Name an animal (cow or bull) in the breed you admire the most and give reason why?
We admire Shottle the most – he is a strong bull on the female side. He sires the type of daughters we love to work with – high production, solid type, and exceptional udders. He is a very consistent bull in our barn! It is also remarkable for a bull his age to still have such a strong proof.

Il est un taureau très constant dans notre ferme! C’est aussi remarquable pour un taureau de cet âge d’avoir une encore aussi forte.
