Sunrise Dairy is awarded the Daphne Taylor Milk Quality Award

Producing the best quality milk possible is an everyday job for a dairy farmer, and it is not easy work, says Jeff Greening.

The owner of Sunrise Dairy in Musgravetown is getting the job done though. However, he quickly credited his hard-working staff after being recognized with the Daphne Taylor Milk Quality Award at the Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Labrador annual general meeting in Corner Brook Friday.

The award, presented by the Department of Natural Resources, is based on equipment maintenance, milk cleanliness, appearance and health of the cow herd, barns and general landscaping. All dairy producers are eligible, as they collect points for specific criteria throughout the year.

“We aim for the best quality milk everyday to give the consumer what they want,” Greening said.

Sunrise Dairy tied for the honour in 2013, and won once previously, said Greening.

The award was created in 1997 to recognize excellence in production of quality milk. It is an industry award named for a dairy farmer — Daphne Taylor — who took pride in producing high quality milk. She died from cancer in 1996.

There are 29 dairy farms in the province. Only the top three are recognized with awards of merit. N&N Farms Ltd. of Cormack and Glenview Farm of Kilbride tied for second. River Bend Dairy of Lethbridge and Connors Dairy Farm of Torbay were deadlocked in third.
