Scottish and American Scientists Tackle Livestock Diseases

Scientists at Kansas State University and the University of Glasgow in Scotland have received $922,415 Cdn to research bunyaviruses that sicken cattle, sheep and goats.
The money comes from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and the United States Department of Agriculture.
The funding is part of the US-UK Collaborative Animal Health and Disease and Veterinary Immune Reagents program.
Bunyaviruses are new, including the Schmallenberg Virus which was first detected in the United Kingdom two three years ago.
Schmallenberg Virus can cause fever, diarrhea, reduced milk production, stillbirth and birth defects and is thought to be spread by midges.
A vaccine was developed for the virus in 2013 and now protects animals in the UK.
