Sale Summaries: March 9-18, 2023

Spring sales are taking the registered dairy cattle business by storm! Here’s a quick snapshot of sales that took place in the second and third weeks of March:

The Spring Sensation Sale, held the evening of March 9th, was the latest in a long-running sale series hosted by Oakfield Corners Dairy and Lamb Farms in Oakfield, NY. The live cattle were there to see at the farm, but the auction was a hybrid live/online event held in the Parlor Visitor Center. The Alliance assisted with sale management with Tim Abbott and Chris Hill as pedigree man and auctioneer, while cowbuyer.com handling the live feed and online bidding.

Lot 3 – $43,500 – Miss Lambda Fancy-ET, a stylish 9/22 Lambda daughter of the reigning World Dairy Expo Supreme Champion, Oakfield Solom Footloose EX-96.

The UConn Spring Tip Off Sale hammered off 22 lots of cattle and embryos averaged $2,595 ($2,716 cattle & $480 embryo averages). People could bid live in person at Radcliffe Hicks Arena or online via the livestream provided by Wolf Auction Group.

The proceeds from the annual CUDS Spring Classic Sale goes towards supporting learning opportunities for Cornell University Dairy Science club members. 59 multi-breed live lots averaged $2,279 and 19 embryo lots averaged $401.

Lot 8 – $8,600 – Curr-Vale Journ Addison-Red, a 9/22 Journey out of an EX-91 Awesome dam backed by five Pineyvale-bred EX dams.

The Hard Core Selection VI Sale boasted a stellar lineup showcasing Ayrshires, Brown Swiss, Guernseys, Jerseys and Milking Shorthorns. 94 live lots went through the sale arena in Muncy, PA on March 11. Individual breed averages are:
– Ayrshire (4): $2,225
– Brown Swiss (3): $2,667
– Guernsey (5): $4,620
– Jersey (20): $2,055
– Milking Shorthorn (56): $2,285

Lot 60 – $6,100 – Molehill Lars Marln Monroe EXP, a 9/21 Lars due mid-September to Mikes-Dar Loth Transformation. She’s already nominated All-American and backed by Blue Spruce dams scoring EX-91, EX-93 2E and VG-87.

Local Brown Swiss enthusiasts gathered in Cresco, IA on March 11th for the 79th annual Iowa Brown Swiss State Sale with online bidding also available on cowbuyer.com. The sale averaged $2,372 on 58 lots.

Lot 10 – $6,700 – Buschs Weapon Jadyn ET, a December Secret Weapon maternal sister to the 2021 sale high seller, Buschs Famous Jenna.

Radiant Holsteins held their 2nd edition of the Radiant Spotlight Online Sale on March 14th & 15th at the farm in Kingston, PEI. 23 head of Holsteins, Red & Whites, Jerseys, and Ayrshires averaged $3,622, with online bidding managed by Unique Sales & Marketing.

Lot 10 – $7,600 – Cobequid Master Lyric, a 12/22 Master out of an EX Callen dam, then 11 more VG & EX dams from the illustrious Lydia family

The Dare to Dream Tag & Embryo Sale raises money for the Dare to Dream scholarships, and is the brainchild and heart project of Chris & Brianne Brown of Beslea Farms in Yarker, Ontario. Born in the midst of the COVID pandemic, this was the third year for the sale and it was another big success with 29 animals sold grossing $120,500 for a $4,155 average.
High seller:
Lot 21 – $15,000 – Beslea VIP Giraffe, a 9/22 VIP out of an EX-2E Comerica. Giraffe’s maternal sister was National Junior Champion in Louisville in 2017, and there are numerous other show winners in the family.

The Finest at Folts Sale was a first edition undertaking for the Folts family in North Collins, NY running March 17-19th. The bid-off was a combination live and online event with cowbuyer.com handling the online bids. Once all the bids were tabulated, 23 head sold for an average of $6,300.

Lot 13 – $25,300 – Co-Vista Doorman Layla, a 3/22 Doorman with big-time show appeal in the Spring Yearling class, out of an EX-90 Diamondback, then Donnanview Damion Lyza EX-94 2E who was nominated All-American and All-Canadian Senior 3-Year-Old in 2011.

An annual tradition in New England in March is the Massachusetts Blue Ribbon Calf Sale, an all-breeds event held at the Eastern States Exposition grounds. This year’s sale was held on March 18th and featured a full catalog of mainly show age calves from all the dairy breeds from which 78 lots averaged $2,315.
High seller:
Lot 1 – $7,350 – Siemers W Talladega-Red-ET, a 9/22 Warrior out of Strans-Jen-D Tequila-Red EX-96, many time All-American R&W and 2-time International Red & White Show Grand Champion.

The 2023 Budjon Futures Sale was, as always, a class event with the sale ring being set up in the barn and with plenty of hospitality. 80 head of Holsteins, Jerseys, Red and Whites and Ayrshires grossed over $568,000 and averaged $7,104.
High seller:
Lot 1 – $35,000 – Oakfield Tatoo Fancylike-ET, a 3/22 Tatoo daughter of the 2022 WDE Supreme Champion, Oakfield Solom Footloose EX-96 She was purchased by Arjun Singh, Lawwal Holsteins, of New Zealand with Tim & Sharyn Abbott as partners.

On March 18th at the farm and through online bidding via cowbuyer.com, the Kilgus family put up 40 of their best show age heifers and top young cows in their Spring Spotlight at Kilgus Dairy Tag Sale II. This year’s group averaged $2,510.
High seller: 
Lot 55 – $10,250 – Kilgus Casino Noelle, a recently fresh Casino Jr. 2 year old with many EX dams and family members who have done well in the showring, too.

The second Tip-Off at the Topps All-Breeds Tag Sale offered an array of heifers and fresh cows from winning cow families. Attendees were invited out to the farm March 18th for cattle previewing along with food and drinks with the a soft close starting that evening on cowbuyer.com. 21 lots including an Ayrshire and several Holsteins, Jerseys and Brown Swiss sold for an average of $2,767.

Lot 4 – $6,450 – La Rainbow Sweet Vegas, a 12/22 heifer with +1.3 DPR and A2A2 from the Italian high type and DPR bull, Lover.

West Union was the place to be on March 18th for the 2023 Iowa Holstein Spring Sale. The Iowa Holstein Association hosted their 6th annual heifer raffle along with 76 lots on offering for the sale. All said and done, the sale averaged $2,404.

Lot 23 – $8,000 – SDG-PH 7287 Magnum 7991-ET, a 9/22 A2/A2 Magnum at +3013GTPI and +1091NM$, tracing back to the dam of Goldchip and multiple other EX dams.
