Oklahoma Announces Confirmed H5N1 Case In A Dairy Herd

Oklahoma has become the 13th state to have a confirmed positive case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI-H5N1) in a dairy herd, according to the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry.

According to a press release on Friday, the positive sample was collected in April and submitted for testing. The press release stated that the dairy herd has fully recovered.

Department officials say that there is no concern for the safety of milk or dairy products.

According to ODAFF, some clinical signs of HPAI in dairy cattle are:

  1. A drop in rumination
  2. A decline in feed intake
  3. A decrease in milk yield
  4. Thicker, concentrated, colostrum-like milk
  5. Lethargy
  6. Dehydration
  7. Fever

If dairy farmers suspect cases of HPAI, please call ODAFF at 405-522-6141.
