The National Mastitis Council (NMC) is holding this year’s regional meeting in conjunction with the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) Annual Conference, Sept. 12-14, in St. Louis. Dairy veterinarians are vital partners in NMC’s quest to improve udder health, milk quality and animal welfare.
As part of the AABP dairy program, NMC developed programming for the Thursday afternoon and Friday morning sessions. The first NMC session focuses on adding a milk quality revenue stream to dairy veterinary practices. It features Brandon Treichler of Select Milk Producers, Canyon, Texas; Roger Thomson of MQ-IQ Consulting, LLC, Battle Creek, Mich.; and Jim Bennett of Northern Valley Dairy Production Medicine Center, Plainview, Minn.; plus a practitioner panel of Adlai Schuler of Marshall Ridge Farms, Ames, Iowa; Phil Meadows of Mitchell Veterinary Services, Stratford, Ont., Canada; and Ashley Zondlak of Team Management Concepts, Grandville, Mich.
The Friday morning session addresses key issues surrounding antibiotic stewardship, through Daryl Nydam of Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.; Don Niles of Dairy Dreams LLC, Casco, Wis.; and Charlotte Winder of the University of Guelph, Guelph, Ont., Canada. Plus, Sandra Godden of the University of Minnesota, St. Paul, Minn., will explore the relationship between bedding and mastitis.
“The program will provide outstanding mastitis and milk quality information to leading dairy producers, veterinarians and advisers,” said Dave Kelton, coordinator of the program and NMC past president and University of Guelph professor of epidemiology. “We encourage dairy veterinarians to attend the NMC sessions and learn more about NMC.”
