New Hampshire Board Recommends Up To 3.6Mil Aid To N.H. Dairy Farmers

A New Hampshire board that oversees a never-before-funded emergency fund for dairy farmers has recommended that the Legislature approve up to $3.6 million for them for drought assistance.

The board also recommended Tuesday that the Legislature include $2 million in each year of the next biennium budget for the Milk Producers Emergency Relief Fund itself.

Board members hope the Legislature will approve the emergency aid by the time lawmakers are sworn in Dec. 7.

Another recommendation is for lawmakers to ask the federal government to fix a farm program to better help dairy farmers.

Dairy farmers are dealing with low milk prices and need money to pay to feed their cows and cattle to get them through the winter. Many farms produced a small fraction of the corn feed and hay needed.
