National Mastitis Council’s (NMC) Feb. 23 webinar features “The Mastitis Triangle: Still Relevant Today.” This free, one-hour educational offering starts at 2 p.m. Central time.
Andy Johnson, better known “The Udder Doctor,” will serve as the NMC webinar presenter. A popular milk quality and mammary health speaker, Johnson has presented practical and applied workshops and lectures in 47 states and 28 countries over his storied career. Andy is uniquely gifted by being able to convey key messages to help individuals improve dairy operations, whether those helpful talking points are one-on-one conversations delivered in a milking parlor or formal presentations given to hundreds in a lecture hall.
The Feb. 23 webinar will focus on the “mastitis triangle,” which includes the cow, her environment and a dairy’s milking routine. To harvest quality milk, dairy managers must look at the people milking the cows, the milking equipment and cow environment. The most successful milk quality programs are those that look at the whole picture.
“I’ve worked in milk quality for more than 40 years and I still find the best way to solve problems or improve milk quality is to pay attention to the mastitis triangle,” Johnson stated. “Evaluating the cow and her environment first, then the milking routine and finally the milking equipment. This is the only sure way to find answers to dairy farm milk quality problems.”
A frequent contributor to peer-reviewed journals and dairy producer magazines, Johnson received several accolades from industry partners, including the 2019 NMC Award of Excellence for Contribution to Mastitis Prevention and Control, 1998 American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) Practitioner of the Year, 1989 AABP Excellence in Preventative Medicine, 1994 Wisconsin Veterinarian of the Year and 2003 Merial and Dairy Quality Assurance Veterinarian Award. Johnson earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree in 1976 from the University of Minnesota. He practiced veterinary medicine in the Seymour, Wis. area and worked for Grande Cheese as a herd health and wellness veterinarian.
