Morgan Family Wins Supreme And Reserve At Royal Welsh Show 2016

Carmarthenshire dairy farmers Edward and Eiddwen Morgan and their son Iwan and his wife Menna won the double in the dairy ring for the first time Wednesday morning taking the supreme champion sash and the reserve ticket.

Standing in first place was their second calver Nobold Windbrook Joan, which won heifer champion at the Royal Welsh and the Welsh Dairy Show last year

Sired by Gillette Windbrook and out of Nobold Alexander Joan VG89, she was bred by Mike Roberts, Shropshire. Mr Morgan swapped some embryos for her when she was a calf. She last calved in April and is currently giving 58kg daily at 4.24% butterfat and 3.36% protein.

In reserve was their home-bred Jersey Erie Baywatch Grove Ex95, sired by Erie Baywatch and out of Erie Comerica Grove Ex92.

This fifth calver was shown having calved just one month ago and is giving 30kg daily at 7.5% butterfat and 4.6% protein. She won champion at the UK Dairy Day last year.

Both will next head to the UK Dairy Day in September to contest their titles.

Judge John Gribbon, Carnforth, Lancashire, described the Jersey as a “milk machine”, adding: “She has an udder full of milk and I admire the top and the dairyness of this cow.”

However, on the day he said the Holstein’s udder stood out from the rest. “She has a fantastic udder. When we put udders on cows we put them on like this. If I was judging the best udder in the class she would win by a mile.”
