Mont Comi is one of four recipients of the 2014 Ayrshire Master Breeder Shield. We’ve got the details on what’s inspired them, what their operation is like and how they’ve achieved this elite status for their herd!
Was achieving your Master Breeder shield a goal you set when you 1st started breeding cattle?
When we took over the farm we didn’t knew about the master breeder title in the Ayrshire when we realized it existed we applied and got it. You have to know that the Ayrshire Association is extremely index oriented.
Farm Operation Details
In 1996, the farm was the 3rd best average in Quebec and 9th in Canada with 7997 kg for a BCA of 228-228-235. La Seigneurie is a 35 years old herd.

36 Ayrshire Cows, 30 Ayrshire heifers for 5 EX, 17 VG 14 GP.
41 Holstein Cows, 50 Holstein heifers for 1 EX94, 13 VG, 19 GP, 4 G.

147 Ha in field ( 40 ha grain & 107 Ha in hay) and 124 Ha are woods
Type of feed fed?
We crop on 300 acres 85% for hay (timothy,alfalfa mix) and 15% barley. The hay is harvested as round bales and we buy the extra grain needed as dry corn, plus a commercial protein mix.
People involved?
We are 2 working on the farm to make 61.4kg of quota plus the specials prime, Martine Trudel take care of the feeding program, the herd management and administration, Gilles Fournier is responsible of the maintenance, plus genetic & marketing. We split the daily task, In the strong season we hire 1 or 2 employees.
Most influential cow family(s) that helped earn the Master Breeder Shield? Was she purchased or bred?
There are two cows who were most influencial in our herd Mont Comi Trident Java EX92 and Mont Comi Bigfoot Kendo VG 89 both are from our breeding and are good exemple of our breeding goals.
If you purchase cattle, what do you look for? If you haven’t purchase cattle in a while, when was the last animal bought?
We usually buy 1 or 2 cows per year, the selection is primary on type and high production with a special attention to the frame.
Do you flush? When did you start? How often do you flush? Export/sell or implant?
From 2000 to 2011, we had an intensive embryo program, Most embryos were implanted at the farm on the 60% bottom of the herd. Since 2010 we bought our first Holstein and we flush mainly the Holsteins.
Future Goals?
Our future goals are to build a free stall barn for an easier, more efficient labor, we would also work toward being master breeder in 2 different breeds.

Sire that worked well and you feel had the most impact on your herd?
Most influencial bulls in the Ayrshire were Blackaddar BB Kellogg, Bonnie Brae Heligo and Ardrossan EVK Trident three bulls who complement well each other with long productive life, Lately Mont Comi Bigfoot and Des Chamois Poker gave us real good results.
Bulls used, what do you look for in a sire?
Actually we still use Poker with Palmyra Burdette, plus young sires out of Mapleburn Remington and Palmyra Reality coming from top proven cows families. Actually it is hard to find Ayrshire bulls who fit our breeding goals.
Many will say that our breeding program is type oriented, this is because we feel it is the best way to get long profitable production. This is why type classification was developed. In the holsteins, proofs are more reliable so we look more at production and health proof.
Have you changed your breeding philosophy over the years at all?
Our breeding philosophy is the same since we started our herd, this is a question of profitability since the cost to bring an heifer to calving is the same for an EX cow with 3 calving or more than for a Good at an average of 1 to 2 lactations. The only change is thestart of the Holstein herd to compensate the weakeness of the Ayrshire AI bulls selections.
Before achieving your Master Breeder Shield what would you consider your greatest accomplishment as a Dairy Farmer and Holstein Breeder?
As a dairy producer, just to transmit to the next generation a farm that is profitable and functional is a great challenge. To produce top quality milk is also an everyday challenge. As a breeder the greatest accomplishement is to have a positive impact on the breed.

Nous cultivons 300 acres r.partit en 85% de foin (mélange de luzerne) et 15% d’orge. Le foin est fait en balle ronde humide et nous achetons du grain tel que maïs grains, et un mélange commercial de protéine.
Nous sommes deux personnes qui travaillent sur l’entreprise pour 61,4kg de quotas et Martine Trudel s’occupe de l’alimentation, de la gestion de la ferme et de l’administration. Gilles Fournier est responsable de la maintenance, de la génétique et de la commercialisation. Nous nous séparons les tâches diverses et pendant la saison estivale, nous engageons 1 ou 2 personnes.
Lorsque nous avons acquis l’entreprise nous ne connaissions pas l’existence du titre de Maître Éleveur Ayrshire, nous avons donc appliqués et l’avons eu.
Il y a deux vaches qui ont plus influences notre troupeau, soit Mont Comi Trident Java EX92 et Mont Comi Bigfoot Kendo TB 89, toutes deux sont de notre élevage et son des bons exemples de notre but d’élevage.

Nous achetons généralement 1 ou 2 vaches par années, la sélection est principalement la conformation et les hautes productions avec une attention spéciale sur la puissance.
Les taureaux qui ont le plus influencé notre troupeau Ayrshire est Blackaddar BB Kellogg, Bonnie Brae Heligo et Ardrossan EVK Trident trois taureaux qui se complétaient bien avec de longues productions à vie, et plus tard Mont Comi Bigfoot et Des Chamois Poker nous ont donné de bons résultats.
Actuellement nous utilisons Poker & Palmyra Burdette, ainsi que des jeunes taureaux de Mapleburn
Remington et Palmyra Reality qui viennent de famille éprouvée. Aujourd’hui, il est dur de trouver un taureau Ayrshire qui répond à notre but d’élevage.
Plusieurs vont dire que notre philosophie d’élevage est axée sur l’index car nous pensons que c’est la meilleure façon d’avoir des longues productions profitables. C’est pour cette raison que la classification a été instaurée. Les épreuves Holsteins sont plus confiantes donc nous regardons plus à la production et trait de santé.
Notre philosophie d’élevage reste la même que lors de notre début avec le troupeau, c’est une question de profitabilité et de cout, car il en est du même cout pour élever une vache EX avec trois veaux qu’une Bonne avec une ou deux lactations. Le seul changement est nos débuts dans la race Holstein.
Pour un producteur laitier, uniquement le fait de transmettre une ferme profitable et fonctionnelle à la génération suivante est un défi en soi. De produire du lait de qualité est aussi une mission de tous les jours. Pour le point de vue élevage, l’accomplissement d’avoir un impact positif sur notre troupeau est une réalisation fantastique.
Nos prochains objectifs sont de construire une étable stabulation libre pour être plus efficace est un travail plus facile, et nous travaillons également afin d’être nommé Maitre Éleveur dans les deux races.
