Holstein Canada has recently honored the recipients of the Master Breeder Award for 2016. One herd honored with their first shield was Tinber Holsteins of Ste-Cecile-de-Milton, QC, owned by Pascal Martin and his mother Réjeanne Martin. Tinber Holsteins is located in Ste-Cecile-de-Milton, QC and is owned and operated by Pascal Martin and his mother Réjeanne Martin. Tinber is home to 95 head, where milking cows are housed in a tie-stall barn and heifers live in free-stall housing. The herd currently has 5EX, 20VG and 20GP cows, averaging 11,968kg milk with a BCA of 262-292-274.
The Martins farm 66 hectares, including 30 of hay, 12 of corn for grain and silage, 8 of barley and 12 of soybean. The remaining land is used for grazing. The cows are fed a TMR diet, with top dressing with a robot. The ration consists of corn silage, haylage, dry hay, corn grain and barley, raised on the farm. Purchased feeds include soybean meal, mineral and a protein top-dress.
The facilities at Tinber have undergone some changes over the years to more efficient. An expansion was done in 2001, and in 2006 TMR was introduced, and a second silo was constructed. In 2010, a new free-stall heifer barn was erected.
In the beginning, a Master Breeder wasn’t necessarily a goal, but a dream that developed later as the herd began to evolve. That dream was sparked when Pascal attended his first Master Breeder banquet in Quebec in 2009, and from there on, the goal was established, and now accomplished seven years later.
Tinber Brenda Lee VG88-14* and Tinber Diamant Lee VG88-1* are two home-bred cows who are matriarchs of families contributing greatly to the points for the shield. Also contributing to the points is the family of Stepido Blitz Maggy EX91-8*.
When considering a purchase to add to the herd, Pascal looks for individuals that have the potential to improve and add to the herd. This includes great conformation and deep pedigrees with a few stars.
Beginning in 2005, they started do embryo transfer work. Embryos have been sold abroad in recent years to Switzerland, Germany, Belarus, Argentina, Australia, Japan and Indian. Pascal says they tend to prefer conventional embryo transplant, but do employ IVF for some animals.
When choosing bulls, they look for complete bulls that make great uddered cows that age well. Currently, bulls being used include Impression, Control, Montross, Mr Johnson, Doorman and few other genomic sires. In the past, bulls such as Picston Shottle, Braedale Goldwyn & Comestar Lee have had positive impacts on the herd.
Throughout the years, their breeding philosophy has changed slightly, placing more emphasis on type and conformation. Pascal finds great satisfaction from selling great cattle to other breeders, and watching the successes they have with Tinber-bred cows.
Without a doubt, future goals include beginning work on achieving his second Master Breeder banner before he is ready to retire! In the meantime, he will continue to work to breed profitable cows and work to allow his children to be able to work in a field they will like, and if that happens to be agriculture…he will be a very happy man!
Maîtres-éleveurs 2016: Tinber Holsteins
La ferme Tinber Holstein est située à Ste-Cécile-de-Milton, au Québec, et est la propriété de Pascal Martin et de sa mère, Réjeanne Martin. Le troupeau composé de 95 têtes au total comporte 5 vaches EX, 20 TB et 20 BP qui produisent en moyenne 11 986 kg de lait (MCR 262-292-274). Les vaches en lactation sont logées en stabulation entravée alors que les taures sont en stabulation libre.
Les Martin cultivent 66 hectares, dont 30 en foin, 12 en maïs grain et ensilage de maïs, 8 en orge, 12 en soya et le reste est utilisé en pâturage. Les vaches sont nourries à la RTM et un robot s’occupe de complémenter celles qui en ont besoin. La ration est constituée d’ensilage de maïs, d’ensilage de foin, de foin sec, de maïs grain et d’orge sèche, tous produits à la ferme. Les aliments achetés sont le tourteau de soya, les minéraux ainsi que les suppléments protéiques.
Au niveau des installations, plusieurs changements ont été apportés au cours des années dans le but d’améliorer l’efficacité. Un premier agrandissement a été fait en 2001. En 2006, la RTM a été introduite et un second silo a été construit. En 2010, l’étable à taures en stabulation libre a été érigée.
Au départ, l’objectif du Maître-Éleveur n’était pas nécessairement un but ultime, mais ça l’est rapidement devenu à mesure que le troupeau évoluait. L’étincelle est arrivée lorsque Pascal a participé à son premier gala des Maîtres-Éleveurs au Québec en 2009. C’est à ce moment que le rêve a été établi, et c’est aussi rapidement que sept ans plus tard qu’il a été réalisé.
Deux vaches souches élevées à la ferme ayant grandement participé aux points de la plaque sont sans aucun doute Tinber Brenda Lee TB-88-14* et Tinber Diamant Lee TB-88-1*. Stepido Blitz Maggy EX-91-8* est également une vache qui a contribué pour plusieurs points.
Lors d’achats d’animaux, Pascal recherche des sujets capables d’amener une valeur ajoutée au potentiel déjà existant du troupeau. Pour lui, ceci veut dire une très bonne conformation ainsi que des généalogies composées de plusieurs vaches étoiles.
La ferme Tinber a commencé la transplantation embryonnaire en 2005. Plusieurs embryons ont été vendus récemment en Suisse, en Allemagne, au Bélarus, en Argentine, en Australie, au Japon et en Inde. Généralement, le transfert conventionnel est préféré à la ferme, mais quelques animaux sont transplantés en FIV.
Lors des choix de taureaux, ils recherchent ceux qui sont complets et qui engendrent des vaches aux pis exceptionnels ayant la capacité de bien vieillir. Les taureaux du moment sont Impression, Control, Montross, Mr Johnson, Doorman ainsi que quelques génomiques. Dans le passé, Picston, Shottle, Goldwyn et Lee ont eu un impact positif sur le troupeau.
Au cours des années, la philosophie d’élevage a passablement changé, mettant davantage l’emphase sur la conformation. Pascal ressent beaucoup de fierté lorsqu’ils vendent des animaux à d’autres troupeaux, que ceux-ci vieillissent bien et que les nouveaux propriétaires réussissent bien avec leurs sujets.
Pour le futur, sans l’ombre d’un doute, un projet important consiste à recevoir une deuxième plaque de Maître-Éleveur avant que Pascal ne prenne sa retraite! Mais entre-temps, poursuivre un élevage rentable et permettre à ses enfants de pouvoir travailler dans un domaine qu’ils aimeront est primordial. Et si c’est l’agriculture, Pascal sera un homme comblé!
