Holstein Canada has recently honored the recipients of the Master Breeder Award for 2016. One herd honored with their first shield was Kakouna Holsteins of St-Alexandre, QC, owned and operated by Sébastien, Clément and Hélène Saindon. Kakouna Holsteins is part of Ferme Saindon & Fils of St-Alexandre, QC, and is operated by Sébastien, Clément and Hélène Saindon. At Kakouna, there are 250 head total, with 108 milking females. The milking herd is housed in a tie-stall barn, while the dry cows live on a bedpack and heifers are housed in a free-stall barn. The herd currently is home to 8 EX, 61VG and 46GP cows and averages 12,457kg 4.3%F 3.5%P.
To raise feed for their herd, the Saindons farm 500 acres, which includes 65 acres corn silage, 200 acres grass and 245 acres alfalfa. In addition to these crops, high-moisture corn, minerals, protein top-dress and soybean meal are purchased.
They are continually working to make improvements in their facilities to enhance their herd and farming operation. In February of 2016, they began milking with 2 Roboleo robots, and in 2015 they built a well-ventilated nursery with controlled temperature.
Becoming a Master Breeder is a goal that has been cherished for years, and has come earlier than expected due to some difficulties and hardships, including a fire in 1999, leaving them with only three VG cows.
They have persevered throughout the challenges to obtain their first shield, greatly due to the influence of Rose Vega Counselor Candy VG88. Candy was a heifer that was housed by the Saindons before they purchased her. The majority of the points for the title come from several branches of her family, including Kakouna Gillespy Caspy VG86-2YR. Caspy is the dam of the first bull they put into AI, Kakouna Coaticook.
Another family contributing a large number of points is that of Kakouna Lheros Val2 EX92-2E-7*. Val2 has produced three Excellent, 3 Very Good and 1 Good Plus daughters. One of these is Kakouna Baxter Valsy EX-3E, another prolific brood cow, having ten Very Good and 4 Good Plus daughters. She has produced over 96,000kg, has received a Super 5 designation, and is due back again this spring.
Over the years, they have changed their breeding philosophy slightly to keep up with technological advancements, particularly since the arrival of their two robots. They look for cows with good teat placement and fast milking speed. However, they still continue to seek the best possible conformation.
When they decide to make a purchase, they first consider strongly the cow’s family. They require cows with good conformation that are highly productive, including components. Recent purchases that they have made over the past few years include: Pierstein Dempsey Rochana VG86-2YR; Jacobs Fever Cam VG85; VT-Pond-View Gold Anna VG87; Arolene Beaucoise June Eleven VG87-2YR; Gen-I-Beq Mascalese Angela VG85; Dubeau Brokaw Dazed N Confused VG86; Pierstein Goldwyn Anika EX92; Ms Brazilia Epic Boston VG86 and Ty-D McCutchen Medora VG87-2YR.
Each year, they do typically 15-18 conventional flushes, keeping most of the resulting embryos to implant within the herd. Typically, they sell about 10 to 15 embryos each year, and consider that to be a good niche market to develop in the future.
When selecting bulls to use in their herd, they begin with conformation and look for bulls that provide good production and high components. They are also interested in selecting for traits such as milking speed, and teat placement. Approximately 80% of the bulls they use are genomic. Currently, they are employing bulls such as Avalanche, Applicable, Coaticook, Brash, Grade, Soloman, Light My Fire, Classic, Dempsey & McCutchen. In the past, the herd has been greatly impacted by the likes of bulls such as Goldwyn, Shottle, Dundee, Lheros and Rudolph.
They are proud to have put Kakouna COATICOOK into AI, and at +3170LPI, +2182M +76F +77P +16Conf, they are looking forward to watching his impact, not only in their own herd, but the herds of many.
Never resting on their laurels, future goals include procuring that second Master Breeder Shield. This will be achieved by continuing to always improve both production and conformation in their herd, building on great cow families. They look forward to continued family involvement in the upcoming generations. There is also the goal of breeding an animal that will do great at the big shows.
Maîtres-éleveurs 2016: Kakouna Holsteins
Kakouna Holstein fait partie de la ferme Saindon & fils, de St-Alexandre au Québec. Chez Kakouna, les propriétaires Sébastien, Clément et Hélène Saindon possèdent un troupeau de 250 têtes au total, dont 108 vaches en lactation. La stabulation entravée loge les vaches en lactation, tandis que les vaches taries et les taures sont en stabulation libre, respectivement sur litière accumulée et avec logettes. Le troupeau est actuellement constitué de 8 EX, 61 TB et 46 BP et produit 12 457 kg de lait à 4,3% de gras et à 3,5% de protéine.
Afin de produire les aliments pour subvenir aux besoins du troupeau, les Saindon cultivent 500 acres au total, dont 65 acres en ensilage de maïs, 200 acres en graminées (mil et brome) ainsi que 245 acres en luzerne et fétuque. Pour compléter l’alimentation, le maïs humide, les minéraux, le supplément protéique et le tourteau de soya sont achetés.
Les propriétaires travaillent continuellement dans l’optique d’améliorer les installations afin de faciliter le travail à la ferme et d’améliorer l’efficacité. En novembre 2015, ils ont construit une pouponnière à température et à ventilation contrôlées, alors qu’en février 2016, ils ont commencé à faire la traite des vaches à l’aide de 2 robots “Roboléo”.
Devenir Maître-Éleveur avait toujours fait partie des objectifs chez Kakouna. Le rêve a toutefois été atteint plus rapidement que prévu, considérant l’incendie qui a tout détruit en 1999, ne leur laissant comme survivantes que trois vaches TB.
Persévérant malgré les embûches afin d’obtenir leur première plaque, Rose Vega Counselor Candy TB-88 a eu une influence majeure. Candy était un animal que les Saindon gardaient à la ferme pour un ami avant de l’acheter. La majorité des points ayant contribué au titre provient de plusieurs branches de cette famille, incluant Kakouna Gillespy Caspy TB-86 2 ans. Caspy est la mère du premier taureau qu’ils ont envoyé dans un centre d’insémination artificielle, soit Kakouna Coaticook.
Une autre famille qui a contribué pour plusieurs points est celle de Kakouna Lheros Val2 EX-92-2E-7*. Val2 a engendré trois filles classifiées EX, trois TB ainsi qu’une BP. L’une d’entre elles est Kakouna Baxter Valsy EX-3E, une autre très bonne vache souche qui possède dix filles TB et quatre BP. Elle a également produit 96 000 kg, reçu un titre de Super 5 et est gestante pour revêler au printemps.
Au fil des ans, ils ont changé passablement leur vision d’élevage afin de s’adapter aux avancements technologiques, particulièrement à l’arrivée de la traite robotisée. Ils recherchent davantage des vaches avec de bons placements de trayons et qui se traient rapidement. Bien évidemment, ils continuent toujours de rechercher la meilleure conformation possible.
Lorsqu’ils désirent acheter un animal, les propriétaires étudient d’abord minutieusement la généalogie de ce dernier. Ils veulent des vaches avec une bonne conformation qui sont très productives, autant au niveau de la quantité de lait que des composantes. Les bons achats effectués au cours des années par la ferme incluent : Pierstein Dempsey Rochana TB-86 2 ans, Jacobs Fever Cam TB-85, VT-Pond-View Gold Anna TB-87, Arolene Beaucoise June Eleven TB-87 2 ans, Gen-I-Beq Mascalese Angela TB-85, Dubeau Brokaw Dazed N Confused TB-86, Pierstein Goldwyn Anika EX-92, Ms Brazilia Epic Boston TB-86 et Ty-D McCutchen Medora TB-87 2 ans.
Chaque année, ils procèdent à environ 15-18 transplantations embryonnaires conventionnelles, gardant la majorité des embryons en résultant afin de les implanter directement à la ferme. Généralement, ils vendent environ 10-15 embryons par année et considèrent que la vente serait un bon créneau à développer pour eux dans le futur.
Lorsqu’ils procèdent aux choix de taureaux, ils recherchent d’abord une bonne conformation ainsi qu’une bonne production de lait et de composantes. Comme mentionné plus tôt, le placement des trayons et la vitesse de traite sont deux critères primordiaux pour eux. Approximativement 80% des taureaux utilisés sont des taureaux génomiques. Présentement, ils utilisent des taureaux tels qu’Avalanche, Applicable, Coaticook, Brash, Grade, Solomon, Light My Fire, Classic, Dempsey et McCutchen. Goldwyn, Shottle, Dundee, Lheros et Rudolph sont des taureaux qui ont influencé positivement le troupeau au cours des dernières années.
Un bel accomplissement dont les propriétaires sont fiers est d’avoir mis Kakouna Coaticook dans un centre d’insémination, et à 3170 IPV/MPG, +2182 L, +76 G, +77 P, +16 conf., ils sont très excités de voir ce que ce dernier pourra avoir comme impact positif, non seulement dans leur troupeau, mais dans plusieurs autres également.
N’arrêtant jamais d’avancer, l’un de leurs prochains projets consiste à recevoir une seconde plaque de Maître-Éleveur. Ils comptent réussir cet exploit en continuant d’améliorer au jour le jour la production et la conformation à partir de souches solides. Ils veulent évidemment intégrer la relève lorsque ce sera le temps et également élever un animal qui pourra faire bonne figure dans les expositions de grande envergure.
