Judges Announced For All-Breeds All-Britain Calf Show

The countdown begins for the Holstein Young Breeders (HYB) All Breeds All Britain Calf Show at The Three Counties Showground, taking place between 13th and 15th October – and the judges are announced!
Judges Announced For All-Breeds All-Britain Calf ShowThe show is a real highlight in the HYB events calendar, where young members demonstrate their showmanship skills and showcase their best calves in a bid to claim the top awards.

For 2017, HYB is delighted to welcome Patrick Rüttimann to judge the National Holstein Calf Show, which will take place on Saturday 14th October.  On Sunday 15th, Steve Mc Loughlin, who sits on the European Showmanship Judges Panel, will preside over the National Showmanship Competition.

Throughout the event, there will be competitions, presentations and a little competitive spirit!  To add some fun, Clubs are required to construct stands based on a chosen theme (last year this was ‘Fairytales’), whilst also making sure their cattle lines and calves stay looking immaculate.  There are a number of stand competitions which run throughout the weekend before winners are announced during Sunday’s prize giving, which provides plenty of incentive for teams to keep up the hard work!  Recognition is also given to a member who stands out as being particularly helpful, by presenting them with the sought after Dick Stapleton Award, whilst both HYB and open stock judging competitions run late on Saturday afternoon.

Are you the next Littlestar?
The Littlestar Award recognises HYB members who have made an outstanding contribution to the breed, HYB and, in particular, their own Club.  It celebrates a young individual who demonstrates commitment, passion and enthusiasm; someone who is praised as a rising star for the future of the industry.  Entrants for this award must be aged 17 years or under and should be someone who attends nearly all Club events, but not necessarily someone who always wins.  Entrants must submit their CV and a personal statement, alongside a nomination form completed by their regional Club Coordinator, before the All Breeds All Britain Calf Show.

Miriam Bagley, Events & National HYB Coordinator for Holstein UK, comments, “The annual All Breeds All Britain Calf Show brings together young dairy farmers from across the UK to compete, learn and network. Last year we attracted over 20 regional HYB Clubs and in total, approximately 360 calves entered the show ring at the event.  This included Holstein, Guernsey, Jersey, British Friesian, Dairy Shorthorn, Brown Swiss and Ayrshire calves.  It’s a highpoint in our calendar and we’re already excited to witness this year’s standard of competition, which will undoubtedly be as high as ever.  If you’re interested in being involved, please get in touch with your regional Club Coordinator for information on attending your Club qualifier – all contact details can be found at http://holstein-uk.org/hyb/contacts.”
