House passes farm bill to Senate

The U.S. House of Representatives sent its trimmed version of the farm bill to the U.S. Senate, just one day after Senator Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., accused the Republican-controlled House of stalling.

Earlier this month, the House passed a diluted farm bill that did not include food stamps.

The White House threatened to veto the farm bill if it omits food stamps, and Stabenow, chairwoman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, has already ruled out passing a farm bill that does not include food stamps, according to Reuters.

“Given the strange process we have had in the House, I would support any fair and open process that gets us a bipartisan, comprehensive farm bill,” Stabenow said. “We’re not going to negotiate with the extreme elements of the House who basically believe we should not support agriculture.”

The current farm bill extension will expire on Sept. 30, and without a new version or second extension, U.S. farm policy would recent to 1949 “permanent law.” Read more here.
