Health concerns with raw milk in Alaska

Alaskan health officials report another outbreak connected with raw milk from a Kenai Peninsula cow-share program.

Currently, five people have been sickened with Campylobacter, two of which sought medical attention. The same strain of Campylobacter jejuni that sickened these people was the exact strain found in cow manure obtained earlier this year from the cow-share farm.

“The genetic fingerprint of the bacteria isolated from these two people and the cow is unique. It has never been seen before in the United States,” Dr. Joe McLaughlin, state epidemiologist, said in a news release. “These outbreaks are an unfortunate reminder of the inherent risks associated with raw milk consumption, and underscore the importance of pasteurization.”

Officials warned the public earlier this year after raw milk from this same cow-share farm sickened 31 people across the Kenai Peninsula. Read more.
