Katherine Gathje, of Richmond, Minnesota and Catherine Thompson of Plainview, Minnesota, have been selected as winners of the 2017 Marshall E. McCullough Scholarships given in memory of Marshall McCullough, the well-respected nutrition researcher and educator from Georgia. This scholarship is presented to two high school seniors planning to attend a four-year college or university to major in an agricultural communications field. The application process includes both a written application and, once finalists are chosen, a video submission responding to specific dairy industry questions.
Katherine Gathje will be receiving a $2,000 scholarship towards her education at University of Minnesota majoring in Agricultural Communications & Marketing with a minor is Spanish. Gathje grew up on her family’s farm with Holstein, Brown Swiss and Red & Whites. She is an editor on her school newspaper and has also been very active in 4-H and FFA. She particularly enjoys competing in speaking events for various organizations. Katherine states, “I want to remain a part of the dairy industry because of the amazing people who already devote their lives to feeding the world. I want to work in agriculture to stand up for those who do so much every day often without receiving the proper thanks.”
Receiving a $1,500 scholarship is Catherine Thompson. She plans to use this scholarship as she continues her education at the University of Minnesota, where she will major in Agricultural Communications and Marketing. Thompson grew up on her family’s farm, Little Valley Dairy and has always helped on the farm. Catherine served as the Olmstead County Dairy Princess, an officer in 4-H, FFA, and Minnesota Holstein and Red & White Junior Associations. She wants to have a future in the business side of the dairy Industry. Catherine states, “The dairy community has blessed with many things. The knowledge, friendships, and characteristics I have gained bring a positive influence on my life. Even after leaving my family’s farm, I know that my experiences within the dairy industry will continue to impact me
