Four Individuals To Be Honored With Obie, Image And Pioneer Awards At 2024 All-American Dairy Show

Four distinguished individuals will be recognized this year for their contributions that have shaped the All-American Dairy Show into what you see today. Steve Cornman of Boiling Springs, Pa., will receive the Obie Snider Award; Diane Cashell of Shippensburg, Pa., is set to receive the Image Award; and Jessica Spangler of Lebanon, Pa, and Kristy York-Morse of Canton, Pa., will receive the Pioneer Award.

The Obie Snider Award, established in memory of Obie Snider, a founding father of the All-American Dairy Show, recognizes an individual who places significant value on service to the dairy industry and community, and who displays high standards of conduct.

This year’s recipient, Steve Cornman, has been manning the milkhouse at the All-American Dairy Show for over 20 years. A retired dairyman and milk inspector for 18 years, Steve spent many years at the All-American Dairy Show exhibiting with his family under the Justa Beauty prefix. In addition to his work in the milkhouse, Steve has served on the show’s advisory committee for many years and was honored with the 2013 Image Award. In recent years, he has taken on the role of ring man for the Ayrshire Show.

Steve attended Delaware Valley College and graduated in 1976 with a degree in dairy husbandry. After graduation, he moved to California, where he worked as an assistant herdsman at Producers Dairy for six years. Steve was a 4-H leader for over 20 years and was inducted into the Shippensburg Dairy Hall of Fame. He also served on the Cumberland County advisory committee, the 4-H advisory committee, Pennsylvania Junior Show advisory committee for the South Central region, and several Pennsylvania Holstein convention committees. As part of a county dairy promotion, Steve even brought a cow to school to educate students about dairy farming.

Steve and his wife, Debbie, currently live in Boiling Springs, Pa. They are the proud parents of two children, Rebecca Daubert and Aaron Cornman. Rebecca and her husband, Jeremy, have two children, Hayley and Trey Daubert, while Aaron and his wife, Lisa, have a son, Ben Cornman. Now retired, Steve spends his time helping Pennsylvania Holstein farmers and works part-time on the grounds crew at a local school district.

Steve has cherished the friendships he has made over the years at the show.

The Image Award is presented each year to an individual who has enhanced the image of the All-American Dairy Show through notable contributions to its reputation, prestige, and welfare.

“Diane has been a guiding hand to many volunteers and workers with the show. With all Diane’s years of volunteering and caring, she has become a personal friend to many by sharing her knowledge and experience, helping others to develop their strengths,” said Helen Zimmerman, one of the 2023 Image Award recipients. “We are proud to call Diane a friend. I know very few people who are more dedicated to the All-American Dairy Show than Diane.”

The 2024 winner, Diane Cashell, has been a key member of the decorating committee at the All-American Dairy Show for over two decades. Starting in 2000, she began assisting with the complex task of housing cattle for the show, which involved organizing over 400 stalling requests by hand. Diane’s initial decorating efforts began modestly with the old dairy office; she and her team expanded their work to include decorating the large and small arenas and the banquet area.

With the expansion of the Farm Show Complex, Diane played a pivotal role in decorating the new dairy office, adding comfortable touches like rocking chairs and a bench.

Diane grew up on a dairy farm in Tioga County and now lives in Shippensburg, Pa., with her husband. She has three children and four grandchildren. She began working for Pennsylvania DHIA in 1978 and was later employed by Lancaster DHIA. Diane also served as a 4-H leader, assisted with fundraising for the Junior Dairy Club in Tioga County, and served on the All-American Foundation Board.

“I want to thank everyone I have had the pleasure of working with—Michelle Cornman, the late Denise Whiting, Sandy McCauley, and Betsy Musser,” Diane said. “A special thank you to Jimmy Weller, and Loren and Helen Zimmerman for all of your ideas, purchases, and the time you dedicate to the All-American Dairy Show.”

The Pioneer Award is presented to individuals who have had a considerable impact on the overall success of the previous year’s All-American Dairy Show, exhibiting time, energy, or leadership that helped improve the quality of the show.

Jessica Rose Spangler, one of this year’s recipients, currently serves as a Cattle Committee co-chair for the All-American Dairy Show, alongside Kristy York-Morse. They are currently in their second year serving as co-chairs. Prior to that, Jessica helped on the Cattle Committee for several years, working primarily with the Milking Shorthorn shows.

Jessica grew up exhibiting Holsteins and Jerseys at the All-American. She is thrilled that her son is now exhibiting his animals at the show.

She graduated from Penn State with a degree in animal sciences and worked as the market editor for Lancaster Farming newspaper for several years before spending time at home with her young children. Jessica currently works for The WebstaurantStore as a software product owner, helping to design and create the software programs that are used to run the company’s warehouses throughout the country.

Jessica and her husband, Joe, live in Lebanon, Pa., with their children, Brady and Makenna. Brady is active in 4-H and keeps busy raising a few show calves each year. Makenna shows horses and aspires to start jumping fences by next year. “Jessica and Kristy have been long-time members of the cattle committee. The show would not have been a success last year without their leadership with the new entry system,” said All-American Dairy Show President Michelle Cornman. “They went over and above to solve any issue that came up during the show.”

Kristy York-Morse currently serves as a Cattle Committee Co-Chair for the All-American Dairy Show, along Spangler. Before taking on the role, she served on the Red and White Dairy Cattle Show Committee for both youth and open shows and has been involved with the All-American Dairy Show for over 15 years.

Kristy first began attending the All-American as a 4-H member, participating in the Pennsylvania State Youth Show. Her fondest memory from those early years was seeing Northcroft Ella Elevation.

She works for Dairy Farmers of America as a Field Representative and is in her 28th year as a 4-H leader. Kristy is also the state director for the Bradford County Holstein Association and is active with the Troy FFA Alumni Association. Additionally, she serves as the cattle superintendent for the Bradford County Youth Dairy Show.

Kristy and her husband, Jeff, live in Canton, Pa. They enjoy spending time with their grandchildren, Sawyer, Olivia, and Carter, as they begin their 4-H careers showing dairy cattle and market lambs.

These awards will be presented at the All-American Dairy Show on Monday, September 18, during the Premier National Junior Show at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg.
