The Bysterveldt’s of Winterbay Holsteins in Mt. Stewart, PEI have received their first Master Breeder Shield this year.

John and Janet Bysterveldt, along with son Jeff and his wife Amy operate Wintebay. They have one full time employee, Dave Gormley. The family farm began in 1957, when John’s parents, Marinus and Anna Marie emigrated to Canada from Holland.

The herd consists of 200 head, including an 80-cow milking herd is housed in a tie-stall barn. Herd classification totals include 21 Excellent cows, 61 Very Goods and 26 Good Plus. The herd currently has a lactation average of 11,000M 4.4%F 3.4%P. The milking herd is fed a TMR based on grass and corn silage, barley, supplement, soybeans and soymeal, along with hay. Dry cows and heifers are fed round bale silage and hay.

They Bystreet’s run 500 acres on their farm, raising 60 acres of corn, 120 acres of barley and 320 acres of grass and pasture. They purchase soybeans and soymeal for feed, along with supplement.

In 2002, they built their current dairy barn and added a new dry cow facility in 2006.

The breeding philosophy at Winterbay is simple: they strive to breed high-type cows that make lots of milk, and that is the goal they have worked toward, adding that a Master Breeder Shield has been a lifetime goal as a breeder of purebred Holsteins. Prior to being named a Master Breeder, the family feels their greatest achievement as registered Holstein breeders was breeding the 2010 Royal Winter Fair Champion, Winterbay Goldwyn Lotto EX95, who was also a two-time All-American & All-Canadian.

The family of Winterbay CM Evangeline VG86-9* has been the most influential cow in contributing to earning the Winterbay Master Breeder Shield. Her family accounts for 25% of the earned points. Another cow of note, who’s offsrping have been impacting the herd’s performance and development is Winterbay Lindy Gale VG, a Canadian Fat Production Champion. The offspring of Lexis Triumphant Lottery, who is the dam of the 2010 Royal Winter Fair Champion Winterbay Goldwyn Lotto, are just beginning to make a substantial impact on the herd.

The Bysterveldt’s began a flushing program in the early 1990’s and continue to do so now, depending on the time of the year and what is available to be on the program. They implant a great deal of the eggs they harvest, but do sell some embryos. They believe there is a place and purpose for both conventional flushing and IVF.

When they are choosing service sires for their herd matings, they look toward high-type bulls from good cow families, who will protect milk and fat production, along with health traits. Currently, they are using Soloman, Aftershock, Sid, Dempsey, Avalanche and Brady. Past sires who they feel that have had large impact on the Winterbay breeding program include Goldwyn and Starbuck.

When purchasing new animals to join their breeding program, they tend to focus on high-type individuals, with strong cow families and good sire stacks.

In the future, they look to continue to work to make better cows, that will easily produce high volumes of milk. They also plan to use tools that are now available, such as genomics, as they progress forward.

Le troupeau est constitué de 200 sujets, donc 80 en lait dans une étable entravée construite en 2002 et un endroit pour les vaches taries construit en 2006. La classification du troupeau est de 21 EX, 61 TB, 26 BP. La moyenne de production actuelle est de 11 000 kg, avec 4,4 % de gras et 3,4 % de protéine. L’alimentation des vaches en lactation est de la RTM avec de l’ensilage de maïs et de l’ensilage de foin, de l’orge, du supplément, du soja, du tourteau de soja et du foin sec. Les vaches taries, pour leur part, elles reçoivent de la balle ronde d’ensilage et du foin sec.

La philosophie d’élevage chez Winterbay est très simple : élever des vaches hautes en type qui produisent beaucoup de lait. Voici ce qu’est leur but premier. L’obtention de la plaque de Maître-Éleveur est la réalisation d’une vie. En tant qu’éleveur Holstein, en plus de l’obtention de ce titre, ce dont la famille est le plus fière est d’avoir élevé la Grande Championne de la RAWF 2010, Winterbay Goldwyn Lotto EX-95, elle qui a également nommée à deux reprises All-American et All-Canadian.

Winterbay CM Evangeline TB-86 9* a été la vache la plus utile, puisqu’elle a contribué à l’obtention de 25 % des points pour le titre de Maître-Éleveur. Winterbay Lindy Gale TB, une vache renommée au Canada pour sa production de gras a également contribué aux points de Maître-Éleveur, tout comme Lexis Triumphant Lottery, la mère de la Grande Championne de la RAWF 2010, Winterbay Goldwyn Lotto, même si ses progénitures commencent tout juste à avoir de l’impact sur le troupeau actuel.

Nous avons commencé à faire de la transplantation dans les années 90 et nous le faisons depuis ce temps. Tout dépend du temps de l’année et les vaches disponibles. Nous implantons la plupart des embryons dans notre troupeau, mais nous en vendons tout de même quelques-uns. Nous effectuons des transplantations conventionnelles, mais aussi en IVF.

Lorsque nous achetons des sujets, nous voulons qu’ils soient hauts en type et qu’ils proviennent de familles renommées avec de bonnes lignées de taureaux. Ils utilisent actuellement des taureaux comme Solomon, Aftershock, Sid, Dempsey, Avalanche et Brady. Les taureaux qui ont eu le plus d’influence au sein du troupeau Winterbay sont certainement Goldwyn et Starbuck.

Nous utilisons des taureaux qui sont hauts en type provenant de bonne famille avec des caractères de production et de santé. Nous continuons de vouloir élever les meilleures vaches qui produisent le plus de lait possible et tout ça avec les outils qui sont disponibles comme la génomique.
