Teaching is the backbone of the Maskita herd as they earn a Master Breeder ShieldBefore being a registered Holstein herd, the Maskita herd was a School herd, owned by the Vet School, the CIAQ and the Salon de l’Agriculture. With an average of 11 823 kg, with 4.4% & 3.5% of protein. The herd classification included 10 EX M, 2 EX, 21 VG & 9 GP. This award comes with a big team work, with Marcel Bilodeau, who was the manager during 25 years. He pushed hard for the conformation level, in the udder, to have many good mammery systems. Around 150 students milk the cows every year. Manager for 6 years now, Sébastien Roy follows this way. Two full time workers, Jean-Sebastien Savaria & Rick Favreau also promote the high type herd. Thhe herd started with the purchase of some great heifers at La Présentation. One of them was La Présentation Tina GP-82 2 yr old 2*. Her family, who transmists a lot of longevity, contributed 46% of the points for the Master Breeder award. She had a Jubilant daughter, EX 7*, who is the dam of 3 EX, 7 VG and 10 GP. Another Tina daughter is Maskita Talent Tirazie, EX-91 4E, with a lifetime production of 71,188 kg. Another great family is Maskita Astre Lise, VG 9*. Her progeny is complete with 3 EX and 7 VG, 7 VG 2 yr old. The first goal of Ferme Maskita is teaching the philosophy behind the great breeding program and those who wish to work on a farm. They also hostedthe Open Barn day, an activity for the Agriculture producers in Quebec every year, to invite people from the city to visit the farm. Maskita was also the host of the Holstein Quebec picnic a few years ago.
