Was achieving your Master Breeder shield a goal you set when you 1st started breeding cattle?
“Not really, we thought then this award was still very far away from us. But, we were working on it even if we didn’t know it!”
Farm Operation Details
Total # of Animals – milking, and herd total: 110 head total with 46 milking cows
Herd Classification: 7 EX cows (EX93-3E, EX-92 5E, EX-92, EX-90 4E, EX-90 3E x 2, EX-90), 20 VG, 21 GP & 4 G
Acres – forage and grains grown?
The farm owns 514 acres with 287 acres are farmed, 124 acres are rented, 127 acres in wood and 100 acres for the sugar shack.
The herd ration is based on grass silage of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th cut depending on the weather and then dry hay, all in round ball roto-cut with some corn silage done by someone else. The feed goes into the mixer and than fed once a day to the milk cows and every 2 days to the heifers and dry cows. The grain, with dry crushed corn, supplement, top dress and mineral are still given cow by cow by a robot on a rail.

Most influential cow family(s) that helped earn the Master Breeder Shield? Was she purchased or bred?
We’ve bred many of the cows ourselves but, at the beginning, in 1988, my mom bought a 3 month old heifer Vue St-Honoré cp Xelle and she is the main part of the herd. We are now on the 6th generation of the herd and 51% of the herd come from her.
If you purchase cattle, what do you look for? If you haven’t purchase cattle in a while, when was the last animal bought?
First we look at her conformation then her pedigree and then her somatic cell count.
Do you flush? When did you start? How often do you flush? Export/sell or implant?
We did start in 1996. Since that time, around 16 flushes have been done, but not on a regular schedule. We implant for the most part.

8 353 kg 4.2% fat and 3.4% protein with a BCA of 243-249-249 on a official control by Valacta
Sire that worked well and you feel had the most impact on your herd? Hérox,Cornélius, Laro ,BBBK, Caliméro, Rockstar and many young sires. These sires have worked very well at the farm on our cows.
Bulls used, what do you look for in a sire?
Burdette and his sons, Prime, Rockstar and still many young sires. First we look for the conformation, and then a low inbreeding value and 3rd we select high LPI.
Do you think than your herd is more a conformation, genomic, production herd or a mix ?
For sure the conformation brings the longevity so the lifetime production follows in the lifetime in the herd. We have 6 active generations in the herd now, with 2 certificates for over 100 000 kg of milk, one for over 90 000 kg and another for over 80 000 kg – all in the same family!
Have you changed your breeding philosophy over the years at all?
No, still the same, longevity in the herd and the conformation bring that. Because we really think that it’s the key to our success.
Before achieving your Master Breeder Shield what would you consider your greatest accomplishment as a Dairy Farmer and Holstein Breeder?
For us, it’s really the Master Breeder Award.

La ferme possède une superficie de 514 acres ayant 287 acres en cultures dont 124 en location, 127 en bois et 100 en érablière. L’alimentation du troupeau est basée sur l’ensilage d’herbe de 1e, 2e, 3e et 4e coupe si la température le permet et de foin sec, tout en balles rondes roto-cut ainsi que de l’ensilage de mais fait à forfaits. La ration passe au mélangeur et est servie à l’aide de convoyeurs une fois/jour aux vaches laitières et aux 2 jours pour les sujets de remplacements et les vaches taries. La moulée composée de mais sec cassé très fin, ainsi que de supplément, top dress et minéral sont encore donnée individuellement vache par vache par un robot distributeurs de concentrés sur rails.

Est-ce que la reconnaissance de votre titre de Maître Éleveur était un but lors de vos débuts en élevage?
Non pas vraiment on pensait que c’était trop loin de nous. Mais en fait, on travaillait dans ce sens sans le savoir vraiment.
La ou les familles les plus importantes dans votre titre de Maître Éleveur. Est-ce des vaches achetées ou élevées
Des vaches élevés c’est sûr. Mais à la base en 1988 ma mère avait acheté une génisse à trois mois d’âge. « Vue St-Honoré cp Xelle » et c’est de elle qu’on a bâtit le troupeau. Maintenant on est rendu à la 6 e génération et 51 % du troupeau est de sa descendance.
Faites-vous des récoltes embryonnaires ? Quand avez-vous commencé ? À quelle fréquence faites-vous des récoltes ? Les vendez-vous ou implantez la majeure partie
Oui en 1996. Et depuis ce temps environ 15 flush ont été faits mais pas sur une base régulière. Quand ça adonne. Et oui on implante la majorité.

Sa conformation en premier lieu, sa généalogie en 2e et ses cellules somatiques en 3e
Quels sont le ou les taureaux qui ont eu un gros impact dans votre troupeau
Hérox,Cornélius, Laro ,BBBK, Caliméro, Rockstar et beaucoup de jeunes taureaux .
Ce sont les taureaux qui ont très bien fonctionné, croisé chez nous
Quels taureaux utilisés vous présentèrent?
Burdette, et fils de Burdette, Prime, Rockstar et encore des Jeunes taureaux
Que recherchez-vous d’un taureau?
Conformation balancé en premier , 2e un taux de consanguinité bas et en 3e IPV plus haut
Diriez-vous que vous êtes plus un troupeau axé de conformation, génomique, production ou une combinaison de tout?
Sur la conformation qui apporte la longévité donc la production à vie et la durée dans le troupeau
Nous avons 6e générations actives dans le troupeau présentement, donc déjà 2 certificats de 100 000 kg et un de 90 000 et un de 80 000 dans celles-ci
Avez-vous changé votre philosophie d’élevage à travers les années? Pourquoi?
Non toujours la même, la longévité dans le troupeau apporter par la conformation. Par ce qu’on pense vraiment que c’est ça le clé du succès.
Avant d’être récompensé de votre titre de Maître Éleveur, quel serait pour vous le plus grand accomplissement en tant que producteur laitier et éleveur ?
Non évidemment c’était cet honneur qu’est le titre de « Maitres Éleveurs »
