Production was down for most dairy products in February.
USDA’s monthly report shows the only products with more production were frozen yogurt, which was up 2.7% from February of last year and butter, which was 2.6% higher than a year ago. Butter production did dip from January 7.1% with 203 million pounds produced in February.
USDA says the total cheese output was 1.11 billion pounds, down 8.7% from January and 2.2% from a year ago. Italian type cheese totaled 474 million pounds. That’s 8.8% below January and half of a percent below February of 2024. American type cheese production totaled 441 million pounds. That’s 8.5% less than the previous month and 1.3% below year-ago levels.
Nonfat dry milk production was 0.3% lower than a year ago at 147 million pounds. Skim milk powder production dropped 15.1% to just 30.8 million pounds.
Dry whey production was down 16.7% to 60.1 million pounds. Lactose and whey protein concentrate were also down 4.2% and 6.8% respectively.
Except for yogurt, frozen dairy product production was down roughly 3% for ice cream and 5% for sherbet.
