European Union Milk Production Up 3%

Despite tractor parades and manure dumping protests in European cities this summer over low milk prices, European dairy farmers continued to produce more milk, reports Dave Kurzawski, a global dairy analyst with INTL FCStone.

According to data released this week, European Union (EU) farmers cumulatively produced 3% more milk in July than a year ago. For the year, total milk production is up 1% after dairy quotas were eliminated March 31.

In contrast, the United States was up just 1% in July and up 2% year-to-date. New Zealand was up 14% in July, and Australia was up 7%.

By country in Europe:

  • Germany, up 3% in July and up 1% year-to-date.
  • France, no change in July and down 1% year-to-date.
  • Holland, up 10% in July and up 3% year-to-date.
  • Ireland, up 12% in July and up 9% year-to-date.
  • Poland, up 3% in July and up 2% year-to-date.
  • Denmark, up 5% in July and up 1% year-to-date.
