The O’Hara Family of Ontario have a lot to celebrate this year, a Master Breeder Shield happens to be one of those causes!
A long time goal for the O’Hara family was to claim a Master Breeder Shield of their own and this year that goal has been achieved. Find out a little bit about how things go at Dandyland Holsteins and what their plans for the future include!

The farm is a Partnership between Dennis and Sandy O’Hara (kids Ashley & Devin) & Dan O’Hara (wife Donna, kids-Leo & Wesley). Dan – crops/ feeding/ breeding/herd health. Dennis- crops/ feeding/ milking/ breeding/ herd health / marketing. Sandy– milking, breeding, herd health, marketing and accounting, field work. Ashley looks after website with both Devin & Ashley is also looking after social media. Devin, Ashley, Leo, & Wesley all show heifers & cows.

Was achieving your Master Breeder shield a goal you set when you 1st started breeding cattle?
Dandyland Holsteins goal and continuous goal is to create a herd that is strong in type and milk production. It is to find that balance and develop strong cow families. Dandyland has developed a strong foundation and we are now able to breed from these main cow families (Legends, Ginas, and the A’s) in hope to improve on our herd and strengthen our genetics. Dandyland has bred to build a strong foundation and would like to continue to develop a strong herd and work with top quality cattle.
It is a true honour and we are all thrilled and very grateful to be receiving the Master Breeder Shield. It definitely brings some new energy forward to everyone at Dandyland. We are very proud and grateful for the cows that we have bred and developed in our herd. This reassures us that we are taking the right steps to develop a strong herd that we can continue to improve in the future. It was always thought it would be a great honour if our cows were to receive this award but this is definitely the icing on the cake.

Dandyland a élevé pour bâtir de fortes fondations et nous voulons continuer de développer un troupeau qui excelle avec des animaux de qualité. C’est un vrai honneur et nous sommes excités et très reconnaissants de recevoir le prix de Maitre Éleveur. Ça amène certainement une nouvelle énergie pour tous à Dandyland. Nous sommes très fiers et gratifiés des vaches que nous avons élevées dans notre troupeau. Cela nous rassure que nous sommes sur la bonne voie sur le développement de notre troupeau et que nous pouvons continuer de l’améliorer dans le futur. Nous avons toujours pensé que ce serait un grand honneur pour nos vaches de recevoir ce prix, mais il s’agit définitivement du glaçage sur le gâteau.

What bulls are you using now? What do you look for in a sire? Would you say you are type, genomic, production focused or a combination of these?
-Now using Atwood, Sid, Windbrook, Aftershock
Looking for: deep pedigrees, a balance between type and production with a focus on type- a cow with strong confirmation will make you money- longevity.
For Young Sires we look at cow families that have proven themselves on type and production.
Genomics should be used as a tool- when considering a ‘genomic bull’ we are very cautious and do not base our decision on his genomic value. We look over the bull proof and identify his weakness and strengths and how this may cross with the particular animal being bred. We also make sure that the bull still has a deep pedigree and strong family foundation behind him.

Génomique devrait être utilisé comme un outil – quand nous considérons un taureau génomique, nous sommes prudent et nous ne basons pas notre décision sur sa valeur génomique. Nous regardons son épreuve et analysons ses faiblesses et qualités et nous demandons comment cela pourrait travailler sur l’animal à inséminer. Nous nous assurons également que le taureau en question a une bonne généalogie avec des bases solides.
Have you changed your breeding philosophy over the years at all? Why?
Dandyland started milking in September of 1975 – built around the existing pole barn that was available and started with 35 grade Holstein heifers. Have been able to change our breeding philosophy over the years because our herd foundation has improved and we are now able to focus is type but believe strongly in a balance of type and production
-most important traits- mammary traits-udder quality, feet and legs, rump
-well put together confirmation cows- healthy happy cows- longevity- produce more- happy healthy cows= happy life – strong emphasis on type-makes us proud to breed animals that excel on the farm and can also represent us well in the show ring
-need to have extremely good environmental conditions to make the genetics flourish
-We believe in longevity at Dandyland .. they work hard for us so we work hard for them.. cow comfort is a strong emphasis at Dandyland and a key factor of our success.

Future Goals?
– succession planning and decisions need to be made on where the direction and future of Dandyland is going
-going forward will depend on the interest and wants of the next generation
-re-evaluate breeding strategy – a plan and goals of where we would like to see our herd to go in 5 years, 10 years from now etc-continue to develop a strong herd and work with top quality cattle
-in the past year we have a had a significant herd turnover because bringing on strong heifers and working on the next generation of breeding animals at dandyland- we need to evaluate these young animals and decide how we will breed these animals to further move forward our herd
– look into methods of developing an improved strategy of setting up an ET Program so we can possibly generate more progeny from our key cow families
-would like to look into the future building a new heifer facility- improve our heifer facility to improve growth
-would like to continue to improve our herd in hope to breed a homebred show winner at a county, provincial and maybe national level

-voir à une façon de développer et mettre en place un programme de ET afin de nous donner la possibilité d’avoir plus de progénitures de nos familles clé
-nous voulons dans le futur construire une nouvelle étable pour les animaux de remplacement – améliorer leur environnement pour améliorer leur croissance
-nous voulons continuer d’améliorer notre troupeau et espérons élever une gagnante d’exposition de compté, provincial, et pourquoi pas au niveau National !

Braedale Goldwyn- This bull has had an incredible impact on our herd and the entire dairy industry. Braedale Goldwyn changed the style and dairy character of the industry. Braedale Goldwyn had a tremendous impact through his consistency in his numerous progeny that excel in the everyday herd and in the show ring.
