DFC representatives in Atlanta defending Canadian Dairy Farmers interests around the TPP

Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) representatives are in Atlanta this week to defend the interests of Canadian dairy farmers during the final push in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) discussions.

“DFC does not oppose international trade; Canada has negotiated numerous trade deals in the past while maintaining the integrity of supply management. However, we will continue to stand firm on defending the interests of dairy farmers and the Canadian dairy supply management system. We oppose endangering the stability and viability of our industry.” says DFC President Wally Smith.

Another round of TPP negotiations started on Sunday at the Chief Negotiator level, with Ministers expected to arrive in Atlanta on Wednesday to conclude the discussions.

In a press release published Saturday, the Canadian government stated clearly, it will continue to defend and protect supply management during the negotiations.

“We are in contact with our government representatives, and I trust that they are doing everything to support and defend the interests of Canada’s supply managed farmers. The Canadian government understands that it is important for the Canadian economy that there are no negative impacts for Canadian dairy farmers at the conclusion of the TPP,” said Smith.

“Canadian milk is produced according to standards that are among the highest in the world for safety and quality, and it’s because of supply management that these standards are enforced,” said Smith. “Canadians don’t want to see a new trade agreement threaten that.”
