DCRC to present uterine health webinar in Portuguese

The upcoming Dairy Cattle Reproduction Council (DCRC) webinar, scheduled for Oct. 27, at 1 p.m. Central time, addresses dairy cattle uterine diseases and will be presented in Portuguese. The presenter, Klibs Galvão, University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine associate professor, is fluent in Portuguese and an American College of Theriogenologists Diplomate.

Providing a webinar in Portuguese serves two primary purposes. First, it allows DCRC to connect with dairy producers, veterinarians and allied professionals in Portuguese-speaking countries, such as Brazil, and hopefully boost DCRC membership in those countries. And second, it allows DCRC to reach native Portuguese speakers in the United States who are dairy herd managers and employees, students, consultants and veterinarians.

During the “Identification and Treatment of Uterine Diseases in Dairy Cows” webinar, Galvão will discuss uterine diseases, such as metritis, clinical endometritis and subclinical endometritis, and their significant prevalence in high-producing dairy cows. These diseases have been associated with decreased pregnancy per artificial insemination, extended interval to pregnancy, increased culling and economic losses.

How significant are the losses? Metritis affects about 20 percent of lactating dairy cows, with the incidence ranging from 8 percent to more than 40 percent on some farms. Clinical endometritis also affects about 20 percent of lactating dairy cows, with the prevalence ranging from 5 percent to more than 30 percent in some herds. Subclinical endometritis is the most prevalent of all uterine diseases; it affects about 30 percent of lactating dairy cows, with the prevalence ranging from 11 percent to more than 70 percent on some dairies.

To register for this webinar, go to: www.dcrcouncil.org/webinars and follow the prompts. As the webinar approaches, you will receive an e-mail with information on how to log in to participate. If you are a DCRC member and cannot attend the live program, you may access the webinar at dcrcouncil.org.

The 2017 webinar series provides information-packed forums. In addition to the every-other-month webinars, DCRC will present “Activity Monitors for Reproductive Management,” by Stephen LeBlanc, University of Guelph population medicine professor, on Nov. 3. These highly regarded educational programs offer attendees from across the United States and around the world access to high-quality information and interaction with industry experts from the comfort of their farm or office.
