Although 2013 wrapped itself up with a third Master Breeder Shield for Craigcrest Holsteins, the achievement brings with it as much excitement as the first Shield in 1987!

Was achieving your Master Breeder shield a goal you set when you 1st started breeding cattle?
Elgin’s parents won a MBA in 1987 and he and his brother David won a MBA in 1997. In 2001, Elgin and his brother David had a complete herd dispersal. When Elgin and Joan started again in 2003, they set several goals that they wanted to achieve together. One of those goals was to achieve a Master Breeder Award.
Les parents de Elgin on gagné un titre de Maitre Éleveur en 1987 et son frère et lui-même l’on obtenu en 1997. En 2001, Elgin et son frère on fait une dispersion complète du troupeau. Lorsqu’Elgin et Joan ont recommencé l’élevage en 2003, ils se sont fixé plusieurs buts qu’ils voulaient obtenir ensemble. Un de ceux-là fut le titre de Maître Éleveur.
Most influential cow family(s) that helped earn the Master Breeder Shield? Was she or they purchased or bred?
Most influential cow family is the Ruby family which goes back to KAS Carlton Ruby. The most influential cow was Ruby’s daughter Montdale Dundee Rubie. MD Rubie was purchased in 2002 as a 4H project along with her twin sister and Elgin decided to purchase their dam as well. The family accounts for about 60% of our present herd. Ruby has 12 EX daughters or granddaughters. Three of these daughters are from Montdale Dundee Rubie (EX 93 6*) and they are Craigcrest Rubies Gold Ring (EX 93 2E 2*) , Craigcrest Rubies Saphire (EX 93 4E) and Craigcrest Rubies Gold Rejoice (EX 94 USA, EX 93).
La famille qui a eu le plus d’influence est celle de Ruby qui remonte à KAS Carlton Ruby. La vache qui a eu le plus d’impact est une fille de Ruby, Montdale Dundee Rubie. MD Rubie fut achetée en 2002 étant un projet 4H avec sa sœur jumelle et Elgin décida d’acheter leur mère également. Cette famille représente 60% de notre troupeau actuel. Ruby a 12 EX filles ou petites-filles. Trois de celles-ci proviennent de Montdale Dundee Rubie EX-93 6* et elles sont Craigcrest Rubies Gold Ring (EX 93 2E 2*) , Craigcrest Rubies Saphire (EX 93 4E) et Craigcrest Rubies Gold Rejoice (EX 94 USA, EX 93).
La force de cette famille est de constamment transmettre d’exceptionnelle conformation et production et l’habilité d’avoir des vaches éleveuses.
L’autre vache d’influence serait Craigcrest TT Nadine (EX 5E 14*) qui était une des vaches du troupeau que partageait Elgin et son frère David. Les animaux de cette famille furent vendus lors de la dispersion en 2001. À travers les années d’autres éleveurs, on su développer sa progéniture et ces animaux sont aussi inclus dans ce titre de Maitre Éleveur.
The strength of this family is the ability to consistently transmit exceptional type and production and star brood abilities.
The other influential cow would be Craigcrest TT Nadine (EX 5E 14*) who was a member of the herd shared with Elgin and his brother David. The animals from this family were sold in their herd dispersal in 2001. Over the years other breeders have developed her progeny and these animals are also included in this MB Award.

We value Type and Production and use many tools to develop animals to their potential. Our focus continues to be a balanced approach to both genetics and milk production.

Have you changed your breeding philosophy over the years at all? Why?
Our breeding philosophy has been to set goals and then work consistently to meet those goals. It’s important to stay current with information and management practices but it is also important to know what you want and work towards it.
Notre philosophie d’élevage fut d’établir des buts et de constamment travailler afin de les obtenirs. C’est important de rester à jour avec les diverses informations et les pratiques de gestions, mais c’est aussi important de savoir ce que l’on veut et de travailler en cette direction.
Before achieving your Master Breeder Shield what would you consider your greatest accomplishment as a Dairy Farmer and Holstein Breeder?We’re very thankful that we have been able to have a variety of accomplishments- raising our family on the farm and our children’s 4H successes, International visitors and tours, leadership opportunities in Semex and Gencor, judging assignments around the world, Craigcrest Rubies Gold Rejoice’s three Unanimous All-Canadian and All-American wins, previous Master Breeder Awards with parents and brother. We also sincerely value the people we have met and the friendships that have developed over the years in Canada and around the world.

Name an animal (cow or bull) in the breed you admire the most and give reason why?
It’s difficult to name one individual that you admire the most. There are many great individuals in the breed and we appreciate each of them for various reasons. We admire cows that have strong starbrood traits, consistently exceptional progeny, longevity, production capabilities.
Right now, as new Master Breeder Award winners, we’re happy to join the other 2013 winners to admire and celebrate the cows in our own herds who have helped us to achieve this Award.

Nous admirons les vaches qui ont de fortes lignées d’étoiles, qui ont de la progéniture exceptionnelle constante, longévité et de la capacité à produire.
