Border & Lakeland Club Show & Sale

An outstanding Christmas Dairy Sale at Borderway!

The last dairy sale at Borderway, Carlisle in 2013 was a complete success for all involved with just over 150 head sold to top at over £4,000 with an overall average close to £2,200.  It is also worth mentioning the quality of the animals on offer.  Many super uddered heifers with wide rumps and great feet and legs made this sale special and were a credit to the breeders involved.

The Border & Lakeland sale was sponsored by Zoetis and Cogent and judged by Mike Dixon, Beech House, Wigton.  The Champion was consigned by Skirwith Hall Farms with a tremendous second calve cow sired by Magor Baroque Allen.  Stowbeck Baroque Hilary displayed all the potential to make a VG87 pointed cow this lactation and sold for 2,500gns to the judge.

His Reserve Champion went to the first place Junior heifer in milk Boclair Triumphant Vision consigned by J Brewster, Boclair Farm, Glasgow and sired by Boclair Triumphant.  This heifer was bred from two EX90 dams both with huge records, she was sold giving 39kgs to an undisclosed buyer for 2.700gns

The top price in the sale was 3,000gns for Lomond Sanchez Misty consigned by livestock photographer extraordinaire Jane Steel from Glasgow.  Sanchez Misty has a big future and although she was not entered for the show she has the potential to be a big winner in the future.  She is bred from one of the great families in the Holstein breed her 5th dam was the European Champion in 2000 for Germany, Wiesenfeld Raider Maryam EX97.  She now joins the Vetech herd in Mauchline owned by R. Veitch.

Pine-Tree Sid has turned many heads at the National Shows this autumn and it was another one of daughters that had buyers excited at Borderway.  Stowbeck Sid Dewdrop was consigned by Skirwith Hall Farms and bred from six generations of VG dams she sold for 2,800gns to R. McNeil, Cairnpat, Lochans, Stranraer.

Following the Holstein Club sale was the second sale to disperse the Darthogue herd owned by WJ Fisher, Mark Farm, Stranraer.  This complete dispersal was all of the most recently calved cows and heifers averaging 34kg.  The success of this sale was testament to how well the animals have performed for buyers from their first sale in October with the first cow in the ring displayed outstanding youthfulness in her 9th lactation selling for 1,100gns.

Topping the sale was one of Picston Shottle’s great daughters.  Darthogue Shottle Joy was fresh in her fourth having gave over 10500kgs in her third lactation as a young four year old.  There is no doubt she will be the foundation to a great cow family selling for 4,150gns to an undisclosed buyer.

R. McNeil from Cairnpat, Stranraer contending bidder on Shottle Joy purchased the second top price at 2,700gns.  This was for Darthogue GB Lena sired by Glasson Balistic, she was a youthful second calve cow with a close to perfect udder.

Harrison & Hetherington would like to thank all the buyers and sellers who have supported the sales in 2013 and would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous 2014.
