Milk production in the top 23 dairy states rose by 0.3 percent in April compared to the same month a year earlier, according to the “Milk Production” report released by the USDA on Monday.
Across all 50 states, milk production increased by 0.2 percent.
Once again the Upper Midwest states posted healthy gains, with Wisconsin up 1.3 percent, Minnesota up 1.8 percent and Michigan up 1.3 percent.
California, the country’s No. 1 milk-producing state, reported yet another decline this month, dropping 0.2 percent.
The report is slightly bullish as total milk production ended slightly greater than expectations, says Dave Kurzawski, dairy analyst with FCStone in Chicago.
This is an abbreviated milk production report from the USDA. Initially, the USDA suspended the report and several others in the wake of the automatic federal budget cuts known as sequestration.
