The All Breeds All Britain Calf Show will once again return to the East of England Showground, Peterborough this autumn. The national event, organized by Holstein Young Breeders (HYB), is a highlight of the calendar and will be held from Friday 14th to Sunday 16th October, 2022.
In addition to the Holstein classes, the leading calf show in the UK features six other dairy breeds: British Friesian, Jersey, Guernsey, Brown Swiss, Ayrshire and Dairy Shorthorn. Young breeders can also compete in showmanship classes, a stock judging competition and have the opportunity to watch demonstrations during the weekend where a range of awards are presented.
Additionally, the HYB Clubs are encouraged to be creative and construct stands based on the event theme whilst also ensuring their calves and lines look immaculate at all times!
Holstein UK is delighted to announce that the judges for the 2022 Holstein classes have been selected. Mr Gary Jones from Gorey, Co. Wexford, will take to the centre of the ring to judge the National Holstein Calf Show whilst Mr Michael Yates of Logan Holsteins will judge the National Holstein Showmanship Competition.
Gary was born and raised on his family’s 50-cow Hallow farm and together with his wife Izzy and their young family, now live on their own farm with the ‘Jones’ prefix which strives to breed balanced cattle with deep pedigrees. The Jones prefix has owned, bought, sold and bred numerous National Champions throughout Europe. Notable animals include Sunnibelle Dempsey Espirit (Grand Champion Swiss Expo 2019, 2020 and Reserve Grand All-European Show & Reserve Grand Bulle Expo 2019), Hallow Atwood Twizzle (Italian National Champion 2016 and 1st place 5-year-old All-European Show 2016), Jomagro Goldwyn Jasmine (1st place 4-year-old Swiss Expo and Italian National Champion 2018) and Knowlesmere Goldwyn Abrakaboom (UK National Champion 2016).
Gary was a full-time cattle fitter and merchandiser for 12 years and has been privileged to fit and prepare many Grand Champions and Junior Champions across the world. Gary is a member of judging panels in Ireland, Europe and USA and has judged many shows throughout Ireland, the UK and Europe.
Showmanship Judge Michael, who farms across two sites with his family in Castle Douglas, Scotland, enjoyed great success during his time in HYB and won the Champion Showman title in 2008, 2013 and 2016 making him the only person to have won the title three times. He has also won the Littlestar Award in 2006 and the Holstein UK President’s Medal in 2015. Other highlights of Michael’s HYB career include being selected to compete at the European Young Breeders School and representing the UK at the European Holstein Championships in Fribourg where he was part of the winning youth team.
