Alberta Milk launches ‘Virtual Pen Pal’

Alberta Milk has taken on a great initiative ‘Virtual Pen Pal’ program to help connect kids with dairy farmers to learn more about life on the farm! With children home-schooling right now this is a great way to help work on their academic writing in a fun, educational way! Be sure to share with your family & friends so we can teach the importance of life on a dairy farm to our kids!

Do you like meeting new people? We do, and so do our farmers! We want to connect you (or your children) with a local dairy farmer by becoming virtual pen pals! It’s a fun way to develop reading and writing skills and it’s an opportunity to learn something new about the people who work hard to ensure you have delicious, quality milk every day.

WHAT IS A PEN PAL?
A pen pal is someone that you write a letter to that you don’t know. It’s a fun way of meeting someone new and a chance to learn something new (or if you’re lucky, many things).

IS THERE AN AGE LIMIT?
Absolutely not! Our farmers will respond in an age-appropriate way.

HOW DO I GET AN ALBERTA DAIRY FARMER TO BE MY VIRTUAL PEN PAL?
All you have to do is write a letter about yourself and submit it below! You can provide as much detail as you’d like, and ask questions about the other person, too.

Here are some things you could talk about if you get stuck:

  • How old you are? (This helps the farmer understand what to talk about)
  • What do you do every day?
  • Do you play any sports?
  • What is your favourite subject in school?
  • What’s your favourite thing to do outside in the summer?
  • What is your favourite season and why?
  • Have you ever been on a farm?
  • Do you have any ideas about what you might want to do for a career?

Here are some questions you could ask if you get stuck:

  • What do you do every day?
  • How do you take care of your cows?
  • Do you have a favourite cow?
  • How long have you been a dairy farmer?
  • Why did you choose to be a dairy farmer?
  • What did you take in school to be a dairy farmer?

Your letter can be either handwritten or typed out, whatever you choose. Now, once you’ve got your letter, you can send it in a couple of different ways. If it’s handwritten, you can take a photo and upload it below (.jpg or .png). If it’s typed, you can either upload a document (.doc, .docx, or .pdf) or you can put the text directly into the box below. Make sure you include an email address in your letter so your pen pal can respond easily.
