Mattea Quigley from Hastings, MN was chosen as this year’s winner of the Hellenbrand Lasting Legacy Award winner, and will be the recipient of a December Red and White heifer calf from the 2022 World Dairy Expo Red and White Grand Champion, Ms Ransom-Rail Beth-Red-ET EX-94. The heifer is owned and bred by MilkSource Genetics, Ransom Rail and Laurie Fischer, Kaukauna, WI.
Applications were received nationwide from an outstanding group of youth with a strong passion for the dairy industry. Mattea is a junior at Hastings High School, and a PSEO student at Inver Hills Community College. In addition to showing dairy cattle, Mattea enjoys showing sheep and goats, dairy judging, and promoting agriculture in her role as Minnesota 4-H Agriculture Ambassador. She will be expertly guided by her designated mentors, Tom Foss, an independent sales representative for ABS and Eric Houdek, employed by STgenetics. The calf will reside at Eric’s home in Hastings, MN and be prepared by Mattea for the upcoming show season.
The runner up was Taryn Burns from Whiting, VT, who received a $1,000 award. The four finalists, Justin Brandel, Lake Mills, WI; Mikayla Derr, New Windsor, MD; Lily Holthaus, West Union, IA; and Emma Hutchison, Ridgely, MD each received a $500 award.
The HLLA continues the legacy of Mike Hellenbrand’s support of youth in the dairy industry. The award provides an aspiring and deserving high school dairy youth a chance to own and show a high-end genetic heifer at district, local and state shows including World Dairy Expo. The winner receives a 50% ownership in a heifer calf from a former WDE Champion. 2026 HLLA applications will be accepted October 1, 2025 through January 1, 2026 for the next HLLA Award. Stay tuned for our announcement of the next heifer calf that will be available from a former World Dairy Expo Grand Champion!
