2018 Jersey Youth Production Contest Results

Seventy-five outstanding Registered Jersey™ cows were ranked during the 2018 National Jersey Youth Production Contest representing 38 junior members.

To qualify, the cow must have completed the lactation between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2018.  Her owner must have been at least 9 years of age on January 1, 2018, but no older than 20 years of age, and be a Junior Member or Lifetime Member of the American Jersey Cattle Association.  Finally, the Data Collection Rating (DCR) for the lactation must have been 90 or higher.

All records were adjusted for age and month of calving (mature equivalent) using statistics provided by AIPL-USDA then ranked according to the lactation value using USDA multiple component prices.  The qualified entries averaged 22,036―1,048―801 m.e. with an average MCP value of $4,384.03.

Rankings were made in two divisions.  Division I includes first lactation records, provided the cow calved for the first time before 30 months of age.  All other records are ranked in Division II.  The cow with the highest dollar value is then declared the contest winner.

JX Clemson Lemonhead 330 604 {6}, owned by Jacob Tatko, Donahue, Iowa, was named winner of Division I and Overall Winner with a MCP value of $6,128.89.  Lyon Legal Lacosta owned by Autumn Courtney, Chouteau, Okla. was named winner of Division II with a MCP value of $5,997.42.

Awards and certificates were presented to the top 10 juniors in each division at the All American Junior Banquet in Louisville, Ky., November 9, 2019.  A total of $550.00 (first, $100.00; second, $75.00; third $50.00; and fourth, $25.00, plus an additional $50.00 to the overall winner) plus plaques and special awards will be presented.  Every participant will be sent recognition certificates.

The 2019 Production Contest entries are due no later than March 1, 2020.  Junior or Lifetime members between the ages of 9 and 20 (inclusive) on January 1, 2020 may submit No more than three records.  On or before the cow’s freshening date and through completion of the lactation, you must be listed as the Recorded Owner on the registration certificate, either (1) as the sole owner or (2) by your name in joint ownership.  If the joint ownership includes more than one junior eligible for this contest, the entry will be made in the names of the eligible junior co-owners.  The best record for MCP dollar value will be ranked in the contest.  Previous Overall Winners of the contest are not eligible.  Records will be standardized on a 305-day, 2x m.e. basis using factors provided by the Animal Improvement Programs Laboratory (AIPL-USDA) and ranked by lactation value, using USDA component values for Net Merit dollars.
