The June show and sale of Holsteins reaped well deserved rewards. The sale
Border & Lakeland Club Show & Sale
Local Breeders Flourish
The June show and sale of Holsteins reaped well deserved rewards. The sale saw a year time high average of over £2100 for fresh and recently calved heifers, with a dozen making over £2300.
The top price in the club consignment was actually for a second lactation cow from loyal local supporters the Wilson family of Skirwith Hall, at 2700gns the six week calved “Stowbeck Talent Brenda” sported the much desired traits of longevity, popular sires, useful type and high butterfat and protein components in its pedigree, she now joins the exceptionally classy herd of N & SJ Sanderson of Burtholme, Lanercost near Brampton. This young cow had earlier won the Championship under Judge Heather Watson of the Gaterigg Herd.
Also up in the leading prices was the 2500gns “Roansbank Galahad Mary”, one month calved and, like the champion, carrying a solid homebred pedigree; the dam being an EX91 seven lactation cow by Comestar Outside. Messrs Graves of Roansbank Herd are dispersing their herd progressively.
Amongst the decent show of heifers was a 2600gns early May calved daughter of the highly noted American sire Morningview Ashlar and out of a wonderful homebred 100 tonne EX92 cow from the Sue family. The grand dam was also a 100 tonne yielder.
It was not only local vendors that fared well in the sale ring. Amongst the milkers over £2400 were heifers from regular consignors Messrs Struthers of Bankhead, Fife, Messrs Milne of Easter Coxton Farm, Elgin and Messrs Roan of Boreland of Colvend, Dalbeattie as well as returning breeders from nearer the border Messrs Fleming of Hillhead, Lockerbie.
Following the collective sale was a Milking portion dispersal of well bred stylish cows and heifers from Steven Blands “Cotegill” herd near Tebay. Sired mostly by very well bred stock sires, including sons from Holmland bred female lines and sons of Berryholme Storm Flo. The batch of 30 included two of the day’s highest prices. At £3045 was Cotegill Pansy 26 VG86, by the Flo son, Berryholme Lemar and sold fresh on her 3rd lactation. The dam with an outstanding 8 lactations, 12800kg, high butterfat and protein EX92-4E homebred cow.
At just over £2500 was a daughter of the EX94 cow Cotegill Princess 16 sired by the Holmland Goldfinger.
Without a doubt many more cows and heifers of all ages from near and distant consigners could and would have been sold successfully.
