US Milk Production Down In June

USDA says milk production for June was down by eight-tenths of a percent from 2023.  Tuesday’s report shows the 24 major dairy producing states made 18 billion pounds of milk in June.  USDA also revised their May report to 18.8 billion pounds, down eight-tenths of a percent from a year ago.  The total 2nd quarter production for April, May, and June was also down eight-tenths of a percent to 57.5 billion pounds.

Production per cow in the 24 major states averaged 2,025 pounds, eight pounds less than a year ago.

The total number of cows hasn’t changed much since January, growing from 8.87 million head in January to 8.88 million head in February, falling a little between March and May, and back to 8.88 million head in June.

California has the most cows with 1.7 million head followed by Wisconsin’s 1.2 million head and 668-thousand head in Idaho.  Michigan continues to have the most milk production per cow, averaging 2,290 pounds per cow, followed by Wisconsin with 2,145 pounds per cow and Colorado with 2,135 pounds per cow.
