Milk production was slightly higher than September, but down fractionally from last October. USDA’s National Ag Statistics Service says milk production for the 24 major producing states totaled 17.9 billion pounds, up one-tenth of a percent from last month but down four-tenths of a percent from last year.
Production per cow averaged 2,013 pounds for October, which was three pounds less per cow than last October. The number of milk cows on farms was 8.91 million head, down 5,000 from last month and down 19,000 from a year ago.
Production in all states totaled 18.7 billion pounds of milk with 9.37 million head of cows.
California leads the nation in milk production with 3.31 billion pounds, followed by Wisconsin with 2.69 billion pounds and Texas with 1.4 billion pounds. Michigan remains the state with the highest average production per cow at 2,240 pounds.
