Lactanet Canada unveiled today Canada’s Top 25 dairy herds according to the Herd Management Score (HMS). Producers from across the country attended a virtual event to discover which farm made the prestigious list.
“We are proud to recognize the remarkable work of dairy farmers in terms of herd management. It was important for us to underline their exceptional dedication, especially this year with all the challenges brought by the pandemic,” says Lactanet Chair, Barbara Paquet.
The Herd Management Score is based on six criteria: milk value, age at first calving, herd efficiency, longevity, udder health and calving intervals. A score is given to each of these criteria according to the herd’s performance against 7 000 others.
“This list is published every year, so it’s a very good tool for monitoring the progress of a herd over time. It’s also interesting to compare the performance of different production systems,” explains Barbara Paquet.
On the following pages, you will find the Canadian top 25 dairy herds, then the top 3 by province and by category. The complete list can be found here.
