Official Judge: André Richard
André Richard hails from Rivière – Ouelle, Quebec, where he owns and operates Ayr-Ouelle alongside his parents, Roger and Thérèse, his wife, Nathalie Ouellet and two children, Émile (2) and Léo (4). Ayr-Ouelle was established in 1984 and is now a Master Breeder herd that milks 50 cows and farms 800 acres of land. André has enjoyed exhibiting animals at the Royal Winter Fair for many years and is honoured to be the Official Judge of the Ayrshire show this year.
1. What has been your most memorable judging experience so far? Two years ago, I judged at the Victoriaville Show and my Grand Champion choice was also Grand Champion at the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin.
2. Who is your favorite cow of all time? One that you have judged and/or one that you admire. I had the chance to take care of Thrulane James Rose at a show and I really appreciated her because she’s a modern model of a dairy cow. In the Ayrshire Breed, Sunnymead Jade’s Silk EX-95, a past Grand Champion at the Royal Winter Fair, is a cow that I really admire and feel very fortunate to have taken care of her at my own farm.
3. What do you love the most about judging? I love judging because I get to really appreciate great animals. Additionally, it is truly amazing to see breeder’s passion and hard work.
4. Describe the feeling you had when you got the call to judge the Royal. It was so incredible but it took me a few days to realize the good news!
5. What are you looking for in your winners? I like to keep it simple. I look for balanced cows with really good udders, large rumps and great feet and legs.
6. Who is your associate judge? How did you select them? Peter Berresfort will be my ringman for the Royal this year. I chose Peter because we share the same ideas about cows and he has extremely good judgment.
7. What is your best piece of advice for upcoming judges or ones that aspire to judge big shows? Don’t be afraid to go and trust yourself!
