American Milking Shorthorn Society hires Smith as Executive Secretary

AMSS is proud to announce and welcome Kate Smith as Executive Secretary. Kate began her duties with AMSS this week and will be in attendance at the NAILE in Louisville, KY through the weekend.

KateSmithA graduate of the University of Missouri with a degree in Animal Science, Kate has a deep history in agriculture and a passion for the dairy industry. She grew up on a small dairy in Southwest Missouri and enjoyed working with Registered Holsteins. The breeding program she and her family developed focused on stylish heifers and high producing, high scoring cows. This desire to breed correct, outstanding individuals lead to success exhibiting cattle at county, local, state, and national shows. Throughout college, she continued being actively involved in the registered dairy cattle industry which lead to meeting her future husband, Matt, at World Dairy Expo. After completing her time at the University of Missouri, Kate made the move to Wisconsin and began working for Semex, USA as a Customer Service Representative. With an interest in dairy cattle genetics, career moves have included employment with Alta Genetics, Budjon Farms, and Accelerated Genetics.

Kate has maintained a select herd of Holsteins and Red & White Holsteins and continues to aid with her husband’s farm, Smith-Crest Holsteins, as needed. Being involved with the herd has led to working with over 30 All-American nominated animals, including her first Bred and Owned All-American, Probert C Bree-Ella-Red.

“I am excited to begin working with Milking Shorthorn Breeders and prepared to be of assistance to the American Milking Shorthorn Society.” Kate feels her on farm experience, along with professional involvement within the dairy industry, has given her a well-rounded knowledge of the industry and provided for varied viewpoints along the way.

With husband Matt, Kate has two children, Mia, 5 years and Moxon, 2 years. They call Watertown, Wisconsin home. Mia is involved with 4-H and enjoys spending the summer working with project calves. Moxon has discovered his love for all things trucks, tractors, and farming.
