Aaron Schraufnagel of Schraufnagel Farms, Brownsville, Wi. received the 2016 outstanding young producer award for National Farmer’s Midwest dairy region at National Farmers national convention in East Peoria, Ill., Jan. 26.

Aaron and his wife, Jeana, are co-owners in Schraufnagel Farms LLC, with Aaron’s parents, Andy, Jr., and Bonnie Scraufnagel and Aaron’s brother, Andy III.

Aaron’s association with National Farmers began before he was born, when both of his grandfathers, Andy Schraufnagel I, and Carl Reible, Sr., joined National Farmers Organization in 1962, said the Schraufnagel’s National Farmers Field Representative Jim Heinen.

“The farm consistently scores 97 or higher on every federal IMS,” Heinen said. “Their farmstead is always neat and tidy, and the whole family is respected in the community.”

The farm has been in the family since 1940, and the current operation consists of 140 dairy cows and 110 head of youngstock. They farm about 600 acres of cropland, growing wheat, oats, corn, soybeans and alfalfa.

Through the years, the Schraufnagels have made many improvements to the farm, including a small free stall barn for dry cows, a calf barn and a 120-cow free stall barn with drive through feeding and side curtains, and a cooling ventilation system. They also use Lely Astronaut robotic milking system.

In addition, they own a custom harvesting business involving about 1,500 acres of corn silage, ear corn, soybeans, wheat and oats for neighbors and regular customers.
